Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been writing fiction for over twenty years. In 2004, I published the first of three books with Kensington/Pinnacle. In 2010, I went the independent route and started self publishing. I just finished my 17th novel since 2004.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest is called The Damage Factory. I often use “What if?” to generate story ideas. I got thinking “What if some unknown person or group started messing with your life?” The implications to me were both horrific and fascinating. I wondered who would be motivated to do such a thing. The Damage Factory was born out of that.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Nothing unusual. I try to make my writing as portable as possible. I believe writing a novel can be done in short bursts. I have a family and a full-time job, so I squeeze the writing in whenever I can.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King made me want to be a writer. Other writers who’ve influenced me are Dean Koontz, Richard Laymon, Cormac McCarthy, Elmore Leonard, Dennis Lehane, and Don Winslow, among others.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a thriller about a man who has visions of catastrophic and violent events. He feels compelled to stop them before they happen, at great risk to himself and his family.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I seem to get the most genuine interaction with fans on my Facebook author page.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write every day if you can. If not, shoot for at least five days a week. It helps keep you in practice. If you want to learn the craft, you have to write a lot. Also, read everything you can get your hands on.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write the kind of book you’d like to read.
What are you reading now?
“The Life and Death of Bobby Z” by Don Winslow.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Starting on another thriller. I hope to write three books total in 2016, plus maybe a novella.
What is your favorite book of all time?
“It” by Stephen King.
