Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m still pretty new to writing. Bear’s Edge is the second book I have completed and the second in the Stranger Creatures series. I earned a BS in psychology followed by an MBA in business. Writing was not in my plans, rather it was just a fun hobby that I mostly ignored – until I couldn’t ignore it any longer.
I love the idea that in life things are not always what they seem and enjoy writing twists and turns. Showing strong, capable main characters who aren’t perfect but are clever and determined is my goal for every story I write.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Bear’s Edge (Stranger Creatures book 2). Sometimes taking a risk can change everything for the better. Grant must take a huge risk to ask Shayla out. The fact that Shayla is Grant’s boss isn’t the only reason Grant hesitates to make his fantasies of Shayla a reality. He lost the people who meant the most to him and caring about anyone again scares the hell out of him.
Shayla’s whole life changed after she survived a bombing. In Bear’s Edge, I wanted to show that there is the possibility for happiness even after loss and tragedy and it can be found in unlikely places.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Yes. Plenty. Or maybe I just don’t get my work done like the stereotypical author who sits down, creates an outline, then writes scenes in order from beginning to end. I tend to get inspiration for stories and scenes when I’m driving or going for a run, just basically doing everyday things- not sitting at the computer waiting and hoping.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Night Circus was the first book I read after the madness of having small children began to quiet. I was struck by the way Celia and Marco are supposed to be enemies in a high stakes competition but they can’t seem to hate one another. Since they can’t openly be together, the two express their feeling in gifts of kindness towards one another.
The capability of kindness is something I wanted to bring to each hero and heroine I created.
Ray Bradbury, Tom Deitz, Dean Koontz, and Daniel Jose Older all created such interesting worlds for their characters and that’s something I hope that I’ve brought into my stories as well.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on book 3 in the Stranger Creatures series. Detective Nikki Jackson (introduced in books 1 and 2) will get her own story with a strong, silent, stubborn as hell hero. I’m also working on book 1 in the Blackstone Beach series. This romantic suspense series will feature hot as sin firemen, danger, steamy situations, and a fair amount of humor and sarcasm.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Reaching out to book bloggers can get your book seen by potential readers via social media. Book promotion companies with easy to navigate, current websites are an excellent tool as well. Also, nothing beats word of mouth, whether you speak at a local library during a publicity event or to a group of book club organizers, just getting the word out about your book and why it’s a great read goes a long way toward building a reader base. Honestly, I’m learning as I go. There’s no perfect solution. Trial and error has been a great teacher for me.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up. The whole process – from writing to publishing to marketing – it’s all hard. Results aren’t always quick and easy but if you believe in your work, keep at it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Enjoy the little things
What are you reading now?
The Latin Quarter by Cara Black.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have a few books that I’m trying to complete and so many more ideas. There aren’t enough hours in the day to write everything I want to write, but I have some science fiction story ideas that just won’t leave me alone.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
