Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve written two books, but I’ve been telling stories professionally via television for years. I’ve created a few TV series under my maiden name and have developed shows for a variety of networks like Syfy, TLC, Lifetime Movie Network, History Channel, and Investigation Discovery.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Sam & The Secrets of the Universe is an adventure through outer space that’s appropriate for ages 9 and over. When Sam is given the opportunity to learn the secrets of the Universe, he uncovers a black hole that is threatening all of existence. I was inspired by all the latest theories about black holes. Could there be other worlds on the other side? I’m also inspired by philosophical and spiritual theories which are explored through the adventure. Sam learns a lot about himself and his shadow traits – which we all have and try to hide!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I work in bursts. I can get a lot done in a short amount of time and then I like to walk away. When I come back to it, I have fresh eyes and am able to burst through the next section or rewrite the last. But if I’m not in the mood to concentrate, I don’t force it.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m influenced the most by philosophical non-fiction. Joseph Campbell’s studies of mythology and the Mystery school, Hermetic philosophy, spirituality in the form of Self-Realization. I’ve also been touched by classic science fiction like Phillip K. Dick and Robert A. Heinlein.
What are you working on now?
I am working on turning my first two books into audio books. I’m also working on book trailers so I can combine my visual background from TV into a way for readers to get a quick sense of the books. I’ve also started outlining my third book, a science fiction story for young adults.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m active on several Facebook groups as well as Goodreads. I think the best results from promoting is directly from Amazon sponsored ads.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I tried Kindle Scout when I was ready to publish the books. Despite being hot & trending the entire campaign, I wasn’t picked. I wasn’t given any indication of why and I don’t know if the book was read by the program. I felt like I promoted them to my entire network and all I got was a rejection letter sent out to everyone who voted. I wish I would have gone straight for Kindle Direct so I recommend skipping programs like Kindle Scout.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading the Essence of the Bhagavad Gita by Paramahansa Yogananda. For anyone interested in the spiritual path, it’s an easy way to grasp the great and ancient text that is full of life lessons about how to raise your level of consciousness in everyday, practical ways.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Sam & The Secrets of the Universe is set up to be a series so I hope to have a franchise under my belt sooner than later. I’ll continue to focus on science fiction based stories that explore unique and unexplored themes.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Alchemist or the Celestine Prophecy are probably tied for my favorite. They both do such a great job of putting truth into a fictional adventure that touches the heartstrings.
