Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a wife, a mom and Sunday School teacher, but my favorite part of myself is being a writer. I have written so many books! They were great! But I flushed them all down the metaphorical (and one or two the literal) toilet. I always wanted to write a novel. A great, epic, romantic adventure novel! And boy did I make some cool starts! I finished all these awesome short stories. But EVERY SINGLE time I’d get done and say, THESE ARE USELESS! How would these help anybody? And when that thought hit me, I realized that what I really wanted to do was write something that would do people some good. Not just read a fascinating story on the bus to work, but would help them out once the got there. And that’s how Small Gate Narrow Road was born.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Small Gate Narrow Road got started when we had a friend go through a divorce. I thought, if I were him, what would I need? What would I want to read? What would help me? Then I started thinking about all the difficult things the other people in my life were going through. What would help them get through the day?
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I drink unprecedented amounts of coffee!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
One of the most influential books I ever read was the Dark Tower Series by Stephen King. This series tracks several characters though literally the craziest and most unexpected stuff you can imagine. And even though it’s fantasy, it reminds me so much of real life, because life is crazy and so much of it is unexpected. Terry Pratchett once said, “Million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten” and that sounds about right. When unexpected stuff does happen, we need strength and encouragement to get through it, and that only comes from God.
What are you working on now?
I’m actually working on my next book, Small Gate Narrow Road for parents.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
There’s no single best way, to promote a book you have to get yourself out there as many ways as possible.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes! Congratulations! You wrote a book! That’s no small feat in itself! Don’t just sit there watching your Amazon sells report. Advertise as much as you can!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Take naps when you need them and smile at as many people as you can!
What are you reading now?
I’m reading Wheat Belly by Dr. William Davis.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Goodness! Who knows?? I hope it’s just always writing the next thing. I won’t ever stop writing and there will always be a “next thing”.
What is your favorite book of all time?
My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers.
