Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Leilani is the mother of two grown children and is in an relationship with a Disabled Combat Vet. She currently holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism and besides writing, she is in the field of Communications.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Her new book, Warrior Lover: Battling the Combat PTSD Relationship, was inspired by her relationship with her partner. Realizing that there are unique areas to dating a Combat Veteran who suffers from PTSD, she looked far and wide for information as to how to handle the highs and lows that these Veterans suffer from. After finding very little information, she went on a mission to find as much out about the illness as possible. After speaking with other Combat Veterans, their spouses or partners and reading countless articles, this book was born!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I started writing this book on my phone. I wonder how many people write books on their iPhones?
What authors, or books have influenced you?
For fiction, I am a fan of Stephen King and Anne Rice. For other genres, I’ll read just about anything.
What are you working on now?
Right now, I would like to do a follow up book to “Warrior Lover” using anecdotal evidence from readers. I think that the Combat PTSD relationship is very complex and it can best be explained through actual sufferers and their partners.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m doing EVERYTHING I can to promote my book. It’s estimated that there’s 11-20% of all Veterans that were deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan that suffer from Combat PTSD. There were 2.8 million men and women deployed to those regions. That means on the high end, there’s 560,000 Veterans that are alive today that suffer from this illness. We need more ways to get this message and tools of help across.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Writing is easy when you write about what you know and what you feel passionate about.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write about what you know.
What are you reading now?
Currently, I’m reading and re-reading my book to figure out ways I could have made it better. I’m also collecting more statistics for the next one.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My dream is to write a follow up to Warrior Lover: Battling the Combat PTSD Relationship.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Witching Hour by Anne Rice. I love the historical fiction in it.
