Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Nick Haskins. I am a self-published author from Toledo, Ohio. I am 39 years old, single, with no kids. I have been writing since I was 17. I have written four books: On the Edge of Heat (African-American/Urban Fiction). Jamal (African-American/Urban/Erotica). My Husband’s Wife (African-American/Urban Fiction). Betrayed (African-American/Urban Fiction).
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is titled Betrayed. The idea for Betrayed started coming to me back in 2012. I had this storyline in my head for weeks about a single father, William Majors, his son, Billy, and William’s new wife, Jennifer. At first the story started coming to me with the title, ‘Major Payne’ (William Majors & Jennifer Payne). Next, I was thinking of titling the book ‘Taboo’ or ‘Deceived’ until ‘Betrayed’ with the black cover and red letters stuck.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
The one unusual writing habit I have is the specific music I play, per project. I have a different playlist for each book I work on, and I only play that exact playlist rather I’m writing, editing, promoting, marketing, etc. Sometimes when I’m writing a chapter I’ll work the song I’m listening to in the story.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Carl Weber and his entire catalog of work is my biggest influence.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a few different ideas right now. It’s a little too early to tell what will be planned for my next release.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Social Media has been an amazing tool to spread the word about my books to a mass amount of readers. The promotions and campaigns that Amazon offer works excellent as well.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up! If writing is your true passion, stick with it even through all the low points you’re going to experience as a writer. If you give up, no one will ever hear what you have to say. Trust and follow your creativity—let it lead; you follow and write, write, write as much as you can.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Trust your creativity. Don’t second guess yourself.”
