Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I live in a village in Derbyshire, England, and so far I’ve written two books. I only started writing just over a year ago.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
It’s called ‘Death at Brambles’, and it’s a murder mystery set in an English village. It’s my first detective story. I live in a small community amongst a lot of characters, and I enjoy writing about similar places. Villages are a good setting for murders fiction, I think.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No, only that I plunged into publishing my first book without any preparation, because I was so fed up with trying to get people to read it and advise me before it was published. Not the best way to do things, though it was nice when I started to get positive feedback.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read ‘Pride and Prejudice’ when I was very young, too young to understand it really, but I fell in love with Mr Darcy all the same! And I read lots of detective fiction.
What are you working on now?
I want to write another book about Rostershire, the mythical county where my books are set – it will be another murder. But I might take rest before I do it, because I’m also a family historian, and there’s some things I’d like to do there.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Here! I make a lot of contacts through facebook.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write the best you can and be persistent.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The above.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading ‘The Suspicions of Mr Whicher’ by Kate Summerscales. It’s about a real unsolved crime. I find this type of book sheds a lot of light on the work of the earlier detective writers.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Writing nonfiction. I’ve got things I should have written about years ago, but things intervened. I think I should try again, now.
What is your favorite book of all time?
It has to be ‘Pride and Prejudice’!
