Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a registered nurse and also have a degree in English. I live in the UK, just outside Bath, but I’m from Dublin.
I’ve written seven novels to date. I write two different crime series – one is based in Ireland and is a more cosy series whereas the other is based in the UK and is more gritty. I’ve also written a stand-alone novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is the third in my Irish crime series, Murder on Clare Island. The inspiration for this was hearing about a lighthouse that was converted into a hotel. I based the story there, with the owner’s permission. Very kindly they have invited me to come and stay which I hope to do next year.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to be warm so, usually, have a hot-water bottle tucked somewhere.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My mother was very keen on Agatha Christie and had all her novels – I read them all when I was quite young.
What are you working on now?
The fourth novel in my Nicola Connolly series about a serial killer.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I find the writing community to be very generous with encouragement and practical support like sharing posts when a novel is launched. This is my first time to use Pretty-hot.com so I’m hoping it will prove to be a great help.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep writing, even when you think that what you’ve written is no good, every writer has doubts. When you’ve finished – edit, edit and edit and if you can afford it, hire an editor. I was very lucky to have met a super editor who offers a great service as well as unending support.
Make writing friends – it’s a lonely business and it is so good to know others who understand what you’re going through. There are some great writing groups on Facebook. Find one that suits you.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Keep writing.
What are you reading now?
I’m re-reading Kate Atkinson’s Life after Life.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have two more stand-alone novels in my head, knocking on my skull, trying to get out. I’ve actually started both, just to get a general idea down. I also want to write the fourth in my Irish crime series, then maybe a fifth in the Nicola Connolly series. Then…well, probably more ideas will be screaming to get out.
