Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a sassy middle-aged lady who enjoys life, singing, playing the piano and flute, and exercising. I was an educator for over 15 years. I received my Doctorate in higher education, a Masters in secondary education, and a Bachelors of Science in chemistry. After teaching chemistry, college algebra, physics, algebra, and various other science courses I became a director, a math curriculum coordinator, and my last job was as an assistant principal at a high school in a small community. I have received numerous awards which includes: Arkansas Education Association Human & Civil Rights Educator Award, National Education Association Award for Teaching Excellence, Arkansas Education Association Newsletter Award, Regional Finalist for the 2008 Arkansas Teacher of the Year, and the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, to name a few.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my latest book is entitled “My Journey with Infiltrating Ductile Carcinoma (Breast Cancer)”. I was inspired by my mother because she did not want me to share my illness with my extended family nor friends. Writing became a way for me to convey my emotions and feelings while my body underwent the various changes that occur when one is receiving chemotherapy treatments, surgeries, and radiation treatment.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I do not have unusual writing habits, I just write what I feel and how I am feeling at the time. However, I do know for a fact that words are POWERFUL and due to this fact I have written a mantra that I quote daily. Believe it or not, we can speak things and circumstances into existence. Words can hurt and words can heal. Therefore, it is important to think twice and speak once because once words are spoken they cannot be taken back.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
There are 2 authors that I am particularly fond of and they are: Jodi Piccoult and Jim Stovall. However, my biggest influence for writing my book was the Bible. I am really into Self-Help/Advice books because I am striving to be the best person possible while going through this journey called “life”. I really want to reach my potential because you never know who is watching and who wants to be just like you. Therefore, it is important that as individuals we be role models at all time.
What are you working on now?
Presently, I am working on getting an audience for my book. I am trying to get my book to as many people as possible; especially, those who are going through some type of illness or just want to be inspired regardless of what life throws at you.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I believe the best method of promoting a book is to ascertain as many book signings as possible, create a personal website, read books that can help you get your book placed on as many websites as possible, take the time to do author interviews because book readers get to know the author as a person, and obtain a publicist if you can to get your book out to a wider audience.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice to any new author is to pursue your dream. Don’t let anyone tell you that you cannot do it. Most of all, believe in yourself and work hard to make your dream come true.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“For evil to prevail all good men have to do is NOTHING!”
What are you reading now?
I read my Bible daily and I am reading a book entitled ” 5-Minute Book Marketing for Authors” by Penny Sansevieri
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have written a 2nd book that I hope will be published before the year ends.
