Let me tell you right off the bat that I’ve had more than my fair hare of problems with weight gain and yo-yo dieting! So I know exactly what it feels like to carry a lot of extra weight and how frustrating it can be to try to lose it. To understand how my problems developed, we need to go back to my childhood for amoment. I grew up in the seventies in the beautiful mid-West of America, one of four kids with loving parents in a close-knitfamily and a very stable childhood. So, in that sense, I was truly blessed and very fortunate, but I guess I first started to pile on weight during my high school years. We were all a lot more active as kids in those days but we sure ate a lot too –including the inevitable junk food – and my weight gain was mostly laughed off as a natural product of adolescence. But the weight persisted into my college years and I began to worry that it might’ve become a permanent feature of my life. Sure, I wasn’t the only gal with a bunch of extra pounds around the middle but I felt pretty self-conscious about my weightand that’s when I started to experiment with diets. Over the past twenty years or so, I must’ve tried every diet and food fad that’s ever been marketed. You name it and I’ve probably tried it. But, like so many people today who are desperate to get their weight under control, I was constantly frustrated by the short-term effects of dieting. Sure, I’d lose a few pounds here and there but they always came back with a vengeance.Settling down and having a family of my own only made the weight issues more acute and I began to experience minor health problems too, embarrassing reactions including eczema and rashes, chronic bloating and fatigue. My doctor prescribed a steroid treatment to control the skin problems but we both knew we were only treating the symptoms rather than the underlying cause of the problems. That was when I came across an on-line article on the Paleo diet, written by a highly respected nutritionist, who claimed that this was the absolute best way to tackle weight issues and the long list of harmful problems that result from our modern diet. To be honest, I didn’t feel I had anything to lose. Over the years since college, I’d tried everything else to lose weight but the article made a lot of sense to me and the research behind the diet was impressive. So I made a decision to try this new eating style and I bet you can guess the result, can’t you? That’s right. The pounds fell away, my skin issues cleared up one hundred percent, my energy levels soared and I started to feel better than I had since I was a kid! Impressed? My husband suddenly noticed that he was married to a ‘hottie’ and everyone wanted to know why I was looking so much younger, fitter, healthier and, in all truth, a darn sight happier. Changing your food choices can have the most far-reaching effects imaginable on your health and wellbeing and that became my motivation to study to become a nutritionist.That simple yet profound decision formed the basis for my new career and I’ve been privileged to work with groups and individuals across the country, advising on the benefits of the Paleo approach and receiving fan mail from very happy people in more than seventy countries around the world.
