Chris Baker has wasted most of his life fearing emotional connections so that now emptiness is his comfort zone. And yes, there are painful reasons for his fears. But an unusual request from a dying friend exposes his heart in the most difficult way possible…with the true love he once betrayed.
When Chris agrees to reunite his friend’s grown son, Max, with his mother in British Columbia, he’s forced to confront the unresolved passions of their affair that triggered her deportation years before. And though the drive to Canada may recall a few idyllic moments from the 60’s, today’s road trip is a dangerous one as Chris and Max are chased by drug dealers and pursued by Max’s impetuous girlfriend.
All the while, Max keeps hidden his real motive for going to Canada and the actual getaway plan he has in mind.
Mature lovers and young lovers. Promises and betrayals. A Family Garden transforms the journey North into a complex journey inward, where Chris must find the strength to overcome his demons or lose forever the love he desperately needs.

I have an M.A. in Creative Writing from UCLA, where I was the editor-in-chief of its literary journal, Westwind. My first novel, High Pocket, tells the story of a gritty, modern-day gold mining heist. I self-published a memoir, Passage From England, that merges my desperate childhood as the son of WWII refugees with the exciting and often dangerous escapades sailing in the U.S. Virgin Islands (see excellent reviews on Amazon). I wrote the libretto for Ode To Phaedra, performed at Opera San Jose, produced on Public Television and recently inducted into the archives for Greek & Roman Drama of Oxford University. I’ve had my own active website for over 10 years, My So-Called Paradise, where my subscribers look forward to my Monday morning posts as do my Facebook and Twitter friends.
