Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I write under the name C.M. Moore because I write with my wife, Monica. Monica is the “M” in C.M. and she doesn’t leave our bookstore much. If you ever get a chance to meet her, I’m sure you would love her. At the start of all my books, I always say that not a single word could exist without her. She is truly amazing. Together Monica and I have written 5 books. We call them the Ice Era Chronicles.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Our latest book is called Two For Tea An (Off-The-Rails) Ice Era Chronicle. This book is about a secondary character you meet in another chronicle, 2:05 a.m. I wrote this book because in 2:05 a.m. Tea is the villain. I realized from my time in Afganistan that we are all the bad guy to someone. I wanted to show a glimpse into this young woman’s world of hardship and in a way, it was healing for me. I like to think that deep down maybe all of us are just trying our best.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My wife and I have this little cafe that we sit at for breakfast. We sit and chat about our characters, plot, and themes. I write out how I think the story should go and what I envision and then Monica likes to sit in the laundry room and write. Two years ago I cut my wrist with a skill saw (not on purpose) and so now Monica does a lot of the typing. Once she is done with a basic outline, I sit on the dryer and we talk and read together. I love the way she gets excited over characters or cries at the end of a book if she has grown attached to someone. Once that’s all done, I am free to leave the dryer and (as funny as it sounds) we start emailing each other back and forth. I look at the work, then her, and then back again. It’s really quite fun. I love spending time with her and working on creating these little work babies. It’s almost as fun as when we used to create real babies.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I loved Robert Ludlum’s Bourne series. Those were the start of my wanting to create a female assassin. When I first started on this it was Monica who said: “Why can’t she fall in love?” Though I wanted to make my main character cold as ice, in the end, I liked that she is a bit soft. This is no Robert Ludlum, but Monica and I try hard and we have fun.
What are you working on now?
Tough question. Monica and I were working on a male-male romance set at Christmas time but it got held up with the publisher, so I am now plotting out the next book, 3:05 a.m. An Ice Era Chronicle. This book will be another glimpse into the “bad guys” and also you will follow Rourke and Andrea as they navigate what we call the “Party Base.”
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
So far I have had a lot of luck with AuthorCrossPromotions. I like promoting other authors like myself.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My only advice at this point is to keep doing it if you’re having fun. Writing is work, I get that, but if you are going to pour your heart, soul, and time into something like this, you should be having a good time while you’re doing it!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Trash or Treasure. Another author said that to me once. She said for every piece of advice you get, you have to look at it and it’s either trash and you can’t use it, or its treasure and keep it. I take all my critiques and criticism that way. Even the hard one-star stuff.
What are you reading now?
I am reading a book called High Lonesome By Tanya Chris. It’s a male-male-male threesome romance about an innkeeper in the mountains, a Russian spy, and a heroin addict. Hey, I can be a straight male reading gay romance. Take off your judgy pants. It’s an interesting book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I will quote Finding Nemo. “Just keep swimming.” That’s all any of us can do. I’m going to take one day at a time and keep writing. It’s fun, it helps my brain, and it makes my wife smile. Man… you should see how she smiles when a book is in her hands. Amazing.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg. Monica and I have both read this and after I came home from Iraq, and she came home from Afghanistan, this book changed our lives. If I could talk everyone in the world into reading it, I would.
