Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am the author of contemporary thrillers ‘In The Dark’ and ‘Lies That Bind’.
I was born and raised in small town in Central Florida. Drawn to suspense and horror stories at a very young age, I spent many years with vivid nightmares, sleepwalking, and an overactive imagination. Although the sleepwalking and nightmares were left behind many years ago, my imagination has remained firmly intact. It runs a bit wild from time to time.
My other interests include photography, biking, music and obsessing over any well-written story, as a consumer and a creator. Influences include the mighty Chuck Palahniuk and the master himself, Stephen King.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is titled Lies that Bind. I’m always inspired to write, from experiences in everyday life. I am constantly playing “what if?” in my brain, and that lends itself to endless ideas. The inspiration for this particular novel came from the idea of ending a story in the most unlikely way. That sounds a bit simple, but it was the initial idea that spread into a much larger tale.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I’m not sure if my habits are particularly unusual, but I do create a mind-map on my iPad, and spread it out further-and-further as I build out character development, and plot lines. I complete an entire plot on this before I write one word. By the time I had my story mapped out for Lies That Bind, the mind-map chart looked a bit like a map of the solar system.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest influence is Chuck Palahniuk. It’s not that I write like Chuck, or even have similar stories. But his insatiable ability to create an character’s inner-monologue is like poetry to me. Stephen King is another big influence for me, in that he brings the reader so far in (sometimes), that it feels like you’re actually there. Specific books that have influenced me include The Tommyknockers, Girl On The Train, Before I Go To Sleep, and Fight Club.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on marketing for Lies That Bind, including book signing schedules, Podcasts and radio guest hosting. I’ll be doing book giveaways, along with t-shirts, stickers, and even a few Kindle Fire tablets, in the coming weeks.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Most of my online books promotions is on my own social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and my own website: http://www.danielfoxbooks.com.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
I write a monthly blog (and my website), and much of tends to turn into a sort of advice. It’s not meant to, but it’s often just me, sort of talking to myself. Some of the advice I’ve written there is certainly for new authors. Things like: Take at least some time to write something every day. Expect to give a lot of effort, for very little or no rewards, at first (other than the reward of knowing that you are an author, regardless of how many people buy your work). Never stop dreaming up new stories. We all need them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
We are all consumers on some level. But, you need to decide if you are going to spend most of your time consuming or creating. Those that choose to be creators make the world. Those that choose to be consumers live in it.
What are you reading now?
I am currently not reading a book (gasp). I’m tied up with spending every waking moment marketing my latest one. Also, to be purely honest, I’m starving for a new novel that sinks its teeth in right away.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Later this year, I’ll start mind-mapping out the full story for my next three books. They will be a three part young-adult series. Something different for me. I’m really looking forward to it. It’ll be the biggest project I’ve tackled yet.
What is your favorite book of all time?
My favorite book of all time is Fight Club. It’s so much more that it seems from the titles (or the movie trailer).
Mild spoiler alert: It’s truly an intimate study of what it must be like to lose your mind.
