Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello. I am an author from Minnesota. I have published two books: “Something’s Not Right with Lucy,” and its sequel, “Unraveled Ties,” both in 2018.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My new release is “Unraveled Ties.” When readers read “Something’s Not Right with Lucy,” they kept requesting a sequel. They enjoyed the characters (even the ones readers love to hate) and wanted to know more about the Campbell family and the residents of Endover. “Unraveled Ties” takes place twenty years after the first book, which is set in 1975 in the Midwest.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My unusual writing habit is doing laundry while writing. The white noise of the appliances help me concentrate and switching loads from washer to dryer build in natural breaks.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I enjoy reading psychological horror/thrillers and I like Stephen King books and Lisa Jackson thrillers.
The author who has influenced me personally is Brian Paone. He not only is a great author, but is my editor. He has taught me so much about the craft of writing.
What are you working on now?
I am currently writing my third novel, “Finding Laura.” Laura is a missing three-year-old whose mother, Miranda, is desperate to find her despite the family blaming her for her daughter’s disappearance.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I like to promote books on my website: dawnmtaylor.com
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Most authors advise to read a lot. My advice is to read books that explain the craft of writing: character development, story arcs, sentence structure, how to write a good ending. There are a lot of good books and links to study writing techniques.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The first draft is the story you tell yourself.
What are you reading now?
I am re-reading “Needful Things,” by Stephen King. I read it years ago, but found an used copy at a local book store. It combines my love of horror and antique shops.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have published flash fiction, short stories, and novels. I would like to publish some novella length stories.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I read a lot. I don’t really have a favorite. But when I was a child, my teacher read to the class a chapter of “Charlotte’s Web” every day and I remember the anticipation of the next chapter. I hope to provide this excitement to my readers.
