Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
In my day job, I am a software engineer who has always enjoyed writing. I wanted to take the opportunity to show that software engineers can be creative and artistic. I have published one book and have another one in progress.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My current book is called Love, War and Glory: Spoken Words for All Seasons. I have had certain troubles and experiences in finding love and had to overcome various hurdles to achieve my ambitions in life. I wanted to share my thoughts on how to handle disappointments in life, what to do when you achieve your ambitions, staying hungry and what it means to love someone. I’m hoping this book will inspire people to not give in and offer encouragement regardless of what stage they are at in life.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I tend to write when ideas come to me. Ideas can come to me when I’m in the gym, the toilet or even just seeing something on T.V.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Roald Dahl was one of my favorites; Fantastic Mr Fox was one of my favorites. I enjoyed reading Shakespeare especially Merchant of Venice; he was able to tell a story using poetic expressions which I felt was probably a little ahead of his time.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on my second book. It is a fiction book exploring that explores slavery.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
It’s been a combination of speaking to people and Facebook. I have spoken to a lot of people on the train and they have bought the book off me there and then.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
To become a writer I think is actually quite simple; pick up your pen/computer and get writing. The medium you write in is a different matter; that will come over time depending on how far you want to take your writing. The advice I would give to people is don’t let anyone tell you what you can’t and can do. Trust your instinct and let your imagination fly. I believe writers are at their best when they let their ideas just flourish.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Never give up and never let people tell you what you can and can’t do.
What are you reading now?
Ameekial: Abomination by Sara Hampton. A very interesting book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am continuing to promote Love, War and Glory. I’m also starting work on my second book. It is going to be under my own publishing imprint called Akinster Books.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl.
