Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hello! I’m from East Los Angeles, California and have been involved in the activist/punk world for the past decade, as well as in education and writing. “A Piece of Heaven” is my first release and I’m very excited about it. I have published articles, short stories and editorials, as well as zines, news magazines and newsletters.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“A Piece of Heaven” is my latest book. It’s inspired by my love of Science Fiction, Noir and relationships in my own life. The crux of the story deals with family ties as well as recovery from substance abuse, two things I’ve known personally. A perfect backdrop for that story is a cyberpunk, sci-fi world, with the writing style being similar to a guy telling you a wild story in a bar.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I love listening to music while I write. If I’m really zoned in, it’s baroque era classical. If I need a little juice, I’ll listen to crust punk or death metal. The characters dance with the music.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
So many! Ursula K. Le Guin will always be number one for me. I was lucky to participate in writer workshops with her before her death and the knowledge I gained is invaluable. Phillip K. Dick is another huge inspiration. The collective James S.A. Corey inspired the blockbuster writing style. Kim Stanley Robinson influenced the need to impart social justice values in the story. Also the relatable and easy-read writing was influenced by Henry Rollins, Hubert Selby and Chuck Palahniuk.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a story inspired by my late great Grandmother, tentatively titled “Catemaco.” I love H.P. Lovecraft’s stories but he is very problematic, so this is almost a loving parody of a Lovecraft tale, but based in real life experiences with my Grandma. She was from Mexico and practiced black magic in such a charming way.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Bookbub brought me great success! I’m also active on instagram and twitter. I don’t like to beat people over the head with advertisements, I’d rather connect with readers. The publishing industry has changed and people just want to read! They don’t need pomp and circumstance anymore.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write! Self-publish if you say no! The publishing industry is stuck in the past but the world has moved on. Look at the music industry. Just two decades ago, everyone wanted to get signed to a big label, now bands laugh at labels. They’re considered useless. Punk DIY ethics apply to publishing too. Be a good write, take pride in your work, but let’s be real, literary agents and big publishers don’t really get it anymore.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
This might be controversial, but, I was told to force yourself to write everyday. 1,000 words if you can. No matter what you’re feeling. I’ve dealt with depression so I know how hard it is, but I sit down and write everyday, no matter what.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading Slavoj Zizek’s “The Universal Exception.” He can be a little off at times, but generally very sharp. I like to alternate reading fiction and theory. Next on my list is the new Beuhlman novel “The Blacktongue Thief.”
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m so excited about the response so far for “A Piece of Heaven.” It seriously makes me so happy. I can’t wait to finish “Catemaco” and release that into the world as well.
What is your favorite book of all time?
“The Dispossessed” by Ursula Le Guin is brilliant in every way. Just as relevant today as it always was.
