Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been an author as long as I can remember. I was writing books at a little roll-top desk in my room when I was a kid! I’ve written for the Big 5, for smaller publishers, and I indie pub my own work. I can’t imagine a life not writing.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Ruby’s Story is actually a prequel to my Ruby’s Place Christmas Collection. I wrote a novelette in 2017 (Christmas at Ruby’s), thinking it would be a standalone. I loved it so much, I just kept writing new installments, until it wrapped last year. But there was still so much story left to tell! I wrote Ruby’s Place, which takes place before the collection begins…it’s my favorite book of all the Rubys so far.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in the middle of a crazy household–usually in the midst of cooking dinner, fixing a lawnmower, and giving the dog his meds. There’s no perfect time to write. You gotta learn to write in the midst of chaos.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m an old English major, so my tastes run the gamut–literary, romance, horror, sci-fi, women’s fiction. I still love to read children’s novels. One of my favorite parts of Ruby’s Place series is the way it kind of has a bit of a Christmas Carol feel.
What are you working on now?
Re-releasing my first published book (a YA), as well as a humorous collection, and a mystery.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Frequent publishing (I’m getting better at it–it’s really hard for a reviser to let a book go).
Do you have any advice for new authors?
KEEP AT IT. All writers get there eventually. The ones who don’t are the ones who give up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you quit, you’re a fool.
What are you reading now?
I’m always reading more than one book–right now, it’s a collection of non-fiction, poetry, and novels. Halloween got me into horror novels pretty extensively this year. My favorite part of a book is the opening, the set-up.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m a big genre-hopper. I’ve written humor, romance, thrillers, fantasy–and can see myself continuing to explore new avenues.
What is your favorite book of all time?
My favorite book changes constantly. But my favorite movie remains Harold and Maude.
