Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in Glasgow but have travelled around a lot. When it comes to reading, I believe variety is the spice of life. I like to read lots of genres and different styles of writing. I’m also bisexual in my reading – I enjoy books written by both men and women.
At the moment I only have one book to my name. It’s a political thriller (an astute reader may discern some elements of SciFi or speculative technology). I hope to write one or two more books, but I’m not going to put myself under any pressure to do so. There are enough writers who should have stopped at one.
I worked in I.T. for many years in a variety of industries and organisations – The Civil Service, Brewing and Distilling, Waste Disposal, Manufacturing (ERP software). I ended up in The City, working for a financial software company before deciding I’d had enough of I.T.
I changed to Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Moscow while writing my first book – The Zima Confession.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Zima Confession is my latest book. I noticed that the Left had gone crazy and that young people were being increasingly sucked into extreme politics. I wanted to write something that would make everyone think more carefully about these matters.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know what normal habits are. I make a lot of notes which I leave to fester for a long time. I also write scenes for random parts of the timeline in no particular order. I prefer to write in cafes or restaurants. If at home I have music on while I write.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Lewis Carrol, Robert Harris, Anthony Powell, Raymond Chandler, Len Deighton.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a sci-fi novel which takes place in the near future. It’s going to be very weird.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I don’t know.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep going.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Show don’t tell.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading seven books. Some simple Russian books because I’m learning Russian, some heavyweight non-fiction, and some fiction. The fiction is Valis by Philip K Dick.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m going to retire on the vast fortune that my books earn. Realistically, I’m going to try to finish my second book.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There is still my favourite book of all time. I was probably 8 or 9 when I first read it. I read it again every now and then.
