Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I started writing because I was always playing with “what ifs”. Those are especially fun at work, which for me started as a fry cook at KFC and going to the Air Force then on to the next. Those “what ifs” became things I absolutely had to write down and I’ve gotten a lot of them published. I’ve been in three of the Unidentified Funny Objects anthologies, Apex Magazine, Lightspeed, Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine, Daily Science Fiction and a bunch of others. I’m all over the place including AE: The Canadian SF Review… That’s right, Canada rocks with me!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Pendulum Heroes is my debut novel, inspired by an idea I’ve held onto since my youth. It’s matured as I have, so between the funny life lessons and hard knock deployments it’s grown into a pretty addictive tale. I’m glad I was able to cut my teeth with so many story sales to be able to tell it well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
No. But I wonder what a usual writing habit is.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Piers Anthony was one of my childhood inspirations because I dug how he blended science fiction and fantasy together in some of his novels. I was pretty stoked to share the Table of Contents with him in one of the Unidentified Funny Objects.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on Book 3 of the Pendulum Heroes series.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m hoping it’s here!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Peer review. It’s important. Seek it if you don’t have it. Peer, not friend, not mom. I suggest critters.org.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“That’s the problem, you think you have time.”
– The Buddha
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m “reading” Spencer Ellsworth’s A Red Peace. I put “reading” in quotes because it’s an audiobook… the first one I’ve ever tried. It’s taken me some time to get used to it because I’m so used to words on page. I have to stop myself and go back because my mind keeps wandering. That said, now that I’ve trained myself to actively listen a bit better, it’s unfolding very well.
What’s next for you as a writer?
After book three of Pendulum Heroes? Book four of course! That’ll be the wrap up and then at that point I’d like to play around with some of the other stories that have been fermenting while I plot out the heroes.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Piers Anthony’s On a Pale Horse.
