Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have published one collection of short stories and two novels.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I published What Cannot be Cured: The Continuing Ballad of Maggie Doyle in mid July. It is the sequel to my first novel Butter and Whiskey: The Ballad of Maggie Doyle, which itself came out of the first story in my collection of short stories A Little Book of Short Tall Stories and is called Original Sin. I first wrote this story over fifteen years ago an it is about a woman who gives birth to an angel, which sadly dies sending her into despair and madness. The character stayed with me over the years and I thought deeply about what would become of her after such an experience. The result was Butter and Whiskey and although the novel is complete in itself, the character of Maggie was not done with me. I therefore wrote the sequel, and threw her new challenges to overcome. However, Maggie still may not be done with me and I have a further book in the series fermenting away in my head, though it will have to wait as I am currently working on a sci-fi/fantasy novel.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I always have the same music on in the background whilst I write. For the Ballad of Maggie Doyle it was Bach, I have opted for a collection of Opera Arias for my current novel.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Anything by Angela Carter and Jeanette Winterson. I adore Jane Austen’s observational wit, Dickens for interconnected story lines and any good science fiction that makes you think!
What are you working on now?
I am currently working on a sci-fi/fantasy novel for young adults. It is about a character who is sent forward in time by a giant marketing corporation in an attempt to preempt consumer demand. When the time transfer goes wrong he finds himself in a dystopian future in which even the most basic skills of reading and writing have failed to survive. When he befriends a wild girl, who has been raised by wolves and has never acquired speech, he can have no idea that she holds the key to humanity’s future or his part in it.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I mainly use Amazon and have tried various author platforms, but am still very much finding my way.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just give it a go and stick with it and et your characters direct the story for you!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
SHOW DON’T TELL! Easily the best advice anyone ever gave me, though often extremely difficult to follow!!!
What are you reading now?
The Red Tent by Anita Diamant.
I read it many years ago, but it is well worth a second shot.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Just keep persevering.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I think it might have to be Persuasion by Jane Austen. But really, can anyone pick just one?
