Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Honestly, I don’t even know where to begin, except by saying that I’m not your run-of-the-mill person. My past includes being a Spanish, single mom, gay-rights activist, spiritual warrior, artist, and musician.
I believe that good writing draws you in, and should be an enjoyable experience. I am against the pretense of academia, or any other platform that encourages some human beings to think they are better than other human beings.
My proudest moment was being the winner of the pet-owner look-alike photo contest in 2006. My cocker spaniel, Rocky, and I had the same crazy curly hair. The photo was displayed on the store bulletin board for a month!
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book will be published September 20, 2020. It’s called Oh S#*t! I think I’m Gay: a coming out book.
It was inspired by my own life, and particularly the awkwardness of realizing you’re gay, but being afraid to tell others. It is the book I wish that I had when I was young. It’s a workbook, and is full of anecdotes, advice, famous queers stories, games, puzzles, and a queer quiz.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well… if I get an idea, but can’t find a pen to write it down, I freak out! I need to have a pen within reach. It needs to be a pen that works well and writes smoothly. So yes…. I’m quirky. I also need a pen with me when I leave the house in case… you know… I get an idea…
I hate pencils with an indescribable and irrational passion. Their points always break, and they don’t write dark enough or smoothly enough.
Also… as I’m writing I need to police myself for the excessive use of ellipsis….
What authors, or books have influenced you?
David Sedaris is a huge inspiration for me. He makes my laugh, and I just love him! I also like Sara Wiseman as far as spiritual knowledge is concerned….
Also Dr. Wayne Dyer. He is amazing…. just the idea that we have a purpose in life, we are here for a reason…. He is an inspiration to me.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on getting my latest book, “Oh S#*t! I think I’m Gay,” published. After that I will continue work on a my autobiographical lesbian novel about how I moved across the country, and what happened subsequently.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am pretty clueless when it comes to promoting my books. I’m new to this and have pretty much no idea what I’m doing which is apparent when you look at the ASBR number of all my books as being number 198989897872738787823 in their categories.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just begin! It’s so healing to write. Whatever happens after you begin will be determined later. That’s not the reason to write. Write because you need to do it, you know you do! So just start…..
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I like the quote by Audre Lorde
“When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”
What are you reading now?
I’m reading WILD by Cheryl Strayed. I’m also reading Carlos Castenada.
I’m always reading self help and spirituality books.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully selling some books. Maybe?
Oh Also….. I’m going to be interviewed on the Queer Spirit podcast at the end of this month!!!!!!!!!!
What is your favorite book of all time?
Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
