Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an alien–a legal alien who was born in Canada and now lives near Atlanta, Georgia. I have been writing since I was in third grade, but have managed to only publish two books since I started my career as a writer at such a young age. I enjoy spending time with my wife, Kristie, and my two year old, Maddox. I like taking a stab at sci fi video games like Halo and Dead Space, or reading a new Star Wars novel. When I’m not writing or reading, I am outside in the backyard taming the wild, golfing with my brothers, or going for a run.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is called Axiom. The novel is a reflection of the culture I see around me. I am on the cusp of being a millenial, so I have the position of looking back at the generation behind me and forward to the generation coming up, and what I saw was a culture struggling to understand who it was, and what it should believe in. Combined with my own struggles, Axiom was born. The book contrasts the reasoning of the Baby Boomer generation with the emotionalism of the Millenials. I wanted to show the world that to be human we must embrace our mind, our heart, and our soul in order to properly exist.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I am stuck in writing my novel, I hop into writing for short story competitions. This usually gets me unstuck!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
C.S. Lewis, Ayn Rand, Ray Bradbury, George Orwell, and a plethora of other authors have all shaped me as a writer, but Axiom is largely influenced by the ones listed above.
What are you working on now?
I am working on the sequel to Axiom–called Citadel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am a novice at promotion and find it challenging, but I have found Twitter to be a receptive community to get my work out in front of readers. I am still learning every day, though!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
The best way to write is to write yourself. When you write from your emotional, spiritual, mental, or physical struggles/triumphs you will find that you will never run out of anything authentic to write. The best way to capture yourself is to journal. Put down on paper your thoughts, fears, worries, desires and this will aid you in your writing.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
My mom once told me that I shouldn’t give up writing because someone out there wants to hear what I have to say.
Another piece of advice I gleaned from somewhere was to “write like it’s the only novel you’ll ever write.” This helps me to pour all I can into each story.
What are you reading now?
I am reading Brad Thor’s “Use of Force.” I just finished a Halo novel, “Bad Blood,” and a novel by Ernest Cline called “Armada.” I tend to hang out around the sci-fi, fantasy, military action genres, but am prone to pick up a romance every now and then.
What’s next for you as a writer?
That’s a great question! My goal is to figure out how to make writing a career. On top of writing the sequel to Axiom, I want to write more short stories as well as write for online journals.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Tale of Two Cities is my favorite book of all time.
