Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up shy and introverted, with an avid love for reading and eventually writing. I made the bold decision the enter the U. S. Army shortly after graduating high school in order to find direction. It’s a decision I’ll never regret, as I met fantastic people, had experiences I might not have otherwise had, and met my husband of thirty years now. After serving, I entered the healthcare world, becoming a dental assistant and then a dental hygienist. I wrote off and on for many years, and in 2016, after attending my first writer’s conference, made the decision that this is what I want to do! I polished stories and began submitting, and once the acceptances started coming in, I became even more energized. I’ve had the fortune to have fifteen romances published, along with a short story in an anthology that benefits The World Literacy Foundation. While continuing to work as a hygienist, I’m also writing, hoping for many more years of providing sensual romance with contemporary issues. When not working or writing or reading, I’m enjoying family in the Pacific Northwest, along with college football season.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest is a contemporary billionaire romance, “Brewing Up Love With the Billionaire”, featured in the Billion Dollar Love anthology published by Evernight Publishing. A smart-mouth brainiac, devoted to her family’s brewery meets a suave billionaire looking for something different than what his current life offers.
Every year Evernight has an anthology call with a certain theme. This year’s was billionaire bad boys. A story immediately entered my head about a strong-willed woman, Ivy, who is not only brilliant, but snarky and smart-mouthed as well. And she’s not going to fall at the feet of a charming, rich guy. James, my billionaire, is often misjudged due to his money and status. But he’s looking to move beyond that and find something truly worthwhile in life besides fame and fortune.
I loved writing the snarky, flirty banter between the two characters. And also showing their vulnerabilities behind their tough exterior. And their chemistry? Smoking hot from the get-go!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
None that I would term unusual. I work at my PC probably 95% of the time, while also having a laptop, along with journals to jot down random notes/thoughts that enter my head. I started keeping a voice recorder with me, but have yet to really utilize it. Only once have I used it, when a thought came to mind that actually turned into song lyrics. Now whether I actually use those lyrics remains to be seen.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I fell in love with Nora Roberts’! I think she’ll always be the measuring rod for me when it comes to romance. Over the years, I’ve discovered such a variety of authors, from Donna Grant, Laura Kaye, and Toni Anderson, to Rebecca Zanetti, Darynda Jones, and Anna Durand. I could go on and on, as the romance genre is limitless with the amazing talent out there.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on finishing book 3 of my Shifter Clans series, about Native American shifters and their fierce women. The first book in the series, In His Sights, was also inspired by an anthology call for Alpha men and the women who weren’t going to make it easy at finding their “mate”. The series involves shifters working with the government, on shutting down rogue labs experimenting with shifter/human DNA manipulation. Book 3 involves a wolf shifter, Max, and a fox shifter, Caterina. Max followed a trail about labs into Honduras, where he encounters Caterina, who has first-hand knowledge of the labs and wants to also stop their work. Max is headstrong and impatient while Caterina is an independent with trust issues. It’s fast-paced and emotional, laced with humor and sexiness.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I wish I had a good answer for this! 😉 I’ve tried a wide variety of promotional venues, from various websites and campaigns, to social media blasting, newsletter swaps, as well as personal appearances. Getting into the Evernight anthology was exciting because they usually gain wonderful exposure, so hopefully the readers will look up more of my work. I have yet to become a best-seller, but I’m tenacious, and will continue to hustle!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Be true to yourself. Write what you love and it’ll be genuine. Engage honestly and sincerely with other creatives, because social networking is critical. Between being an author and working on self-promotion, it can be overwhelming, so don’t try to do it all at once. You have to pace yourself and ask for help, or you’ll burn out. Success won’t be instantaneous, but never give up if it’s what you truly want to do!
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Make them tell you no.” My husband listens to a variety of podcasts and YouTube channels, and one is former fighter pilot, C. W. Lemoine. I listened to a portion of a video hubby had going and his words, “make them tell you no” really struck me. I’m a tenacious, go-getter, usually taking the lead on a project. (Probably the military training in me). But there were some instances when my ideas or forwardness was knocked down or dismissed, which kind of set me back, making me reluctant to even give advice or try ideas. But then I realized, I couldn’t hold my tongue, I couldn’t hold myself back. That’s not who I am. So I go forward, trying all that I can, and until someone tells me no, I’ll keep pushing. And if/when I’m told no, well then I’ll just find another way.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading “Healer” by R. L. Merrill. It’s a paranormal romance with rich characters and deep emotions. Often I’ll have 1-3 reads going at once: a paperback, something on my phone and/or Kindle. But Ro’s book is getting my full concentration because it’s so involved, I want to keep my train of thought on her story.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hmmm… tough one, as I have so many dreams. Definitely continuing to write and becoming a better author! And what author doesn’t want to hit a best-seller list? I know I do! But I want engagement. I love networking and being with other writers and readers. While the majority of my books are digital only, I hope to get some in print in order to make appearances worthwhile.
I’ve also been tossing around the idea of giving self-publishing a go in a few years. While I have loved working with the publishers I have, and it’s been amazing getting my stories out into the world (and I won’t stop submitting to them), I’d like to see what I can accomplish with total control. Intimidating but also exhilarating!
What is your favorite book of all time?
This is always an impossible question to answer. I honestly cannot pinpoint just one book, as I’ve read many that have left an impression on me. Whether they’ve provided inspiration or entertainment, I have loved many books.
