Once every several decades, the mysterious Magus Star appears in the skies over the rim-world Alpha-Seni. Some local myths of the indigenous Senittes credit good fortune to the celestial visitor. Others say it is the harbinger of chaos.
Simon Weller, tech-hawker and expatriate Earthan living in Frenati City, figures the job offered him by a high-born Senitte fem would be simple enough to help get him out of debt. Suspicious of her husband meeting another woman in the capital city’s colorful fringe district, the Yharrio, Claudia Honin-Zay hires Weller to follow her husband to discover what he’s been doing.
But Weller finds himself the unwitting participant in an elaborate plot, one that involves ancient Senitte spirit-worship, illegal drugs, madness and murder. In the Yharrio, a place where anything and anybody can be bought and sold, Weller struggles with his own demons as he confronts a terrifying memory from his past–a Senitte Turning ritual, a primitive ceremony steeped in magic and metamorphosis. Years before, one such ceremony gone horribly wrong killed Weller’s Senitte lover, an incident that still haunts him.
Now a frenzied killer roams the shadows of the Yharrio, one who looks different to all its victims. Is it the mythical shape-shifting Bau-Bau brought about by the power of the Magus Star or is it someone Weller knows all too well, transformed and empowered by modern technology?
Joined by an unlikely group of allies including Honin-Zay’s head servant, a member of a local interstellar hospice, and a feline-humanoid mercenary, Weller races against time in this futuristic noir-thriller to stop the killing rampage and prevent the Turning ritual from ruining another life.
