Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have contributed articles to two other books, but Dear Jane is my first debut novel.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
DEAR JANE is about an adoptee with a childhood cemented in violence and neglect who finds refuge in books, especially Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre. The novel is structured around letters to Jane Eyre, which helps Kit Kat find her voice, her power, and the idea that reading and finding herself in literature can help her heal the wounds that come from familial neglect and silences. It is inspired by my childhood and the book that literally saved me as a teen.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in spurts, whenever I get an idea. I tend to write in my head and then when I get the chance I will permanently put it on paper or type it up.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
A lot of feminist writers have influenced me, although they weren’t considered feminists in their time: Emily Dickinson, Charlotte Bronte, Kate Chopin, Charlotte Perkins Gilman.
What are you working on now?
I have a book proposal on today’s music and how it hypersexualizes girls. I’m also working on a novel about an aging poetry professor who’s taking care of his ailing wife…but with a surprise twist
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I promote my books via Instagram and Facebook; my website is under construction right now to add Dear Jane.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up, take the advice you are given with a smile but keep to your guns. Everyone, including agents, were telling me to write something new, but I couldn’t until this book was written and published. And now it is. And don’t save your rejections — chuck them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Stay away from people that belittle you about your writing. It’s often jealousy. Persistence is the common thread for writers and advice. Keep doing, keep writing, keep submitting.
What are you reading now?
Colette’s stories, especially after seeing the latest film about her. I am also reading a few books written by fellow author friends. We have to support each other through this journey.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Write the next book, without excuses as to why I can’t or am not. Just find the time and space and write it.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte — the focus of my Dear Jane — is my favorite. Not only did it save me but it also brought me into the world of writing and teaching. I teach to share my love of books.
