Marisa Billions is a high school English teacher in Southern California. She holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Criminology. She is the author of the fiction novel, This Too Shall Pass and is working on her upcoming second novel. She lives in Southern California with her wife, Stephanie and son Alexander and two Boxer Dogs, Max and Ruby.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
This Too Shall Pass. It was partly inspired by my own coming out story, and custody battle for my son, and partly inspired by good old fashioned ghost stories.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t do a traditional outline. I write some bare bones ideas and let the story and characters grow organically.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Anne Rice, Lauren Groff, Jeffrey Euganides are my biggest influencers. I love their detail and style. They write in a way that is poetic.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on my second novel, Like Sapphire Blue. My goal is to have it out next year.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still trying to figure that out, so if you can tell me, I’m all ears.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
If you want to do something, stop finding excuses to not do it and just do it.
What are you reading now?
Leverage, by Katherine Black. It’s intense and stressful. But in a good way.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To just keep writing and putting books out there.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I have three. Middlesex, Jeffrey Euganides; Interview With a Vampire, Anne Rice; and American Psycho, Brett Easton Ellis.
