Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
When I was 10, my best friend and I embarked on writing what was intended to be our first book. We lived across the cemetery from each other, which was our shortcut to and from each other’s houses. Our imaginations ran wild, and we soon had no doubt that my next door neighbor, a man who sold gravestones, was killing people to make money for his business, and so we set to writing a book about this nefarious man. We were certain he was going to kidnap one of us for exposing him, so we set up elaborate plans to leave clues so the other could heroically rescue us. We never did finish that book nor did my poor neighbor ever know of our “discovery,” but I have never stopped writing since then. My friend, too, pursued writing, but in a far more lucrative way as a researcher for big firms.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I am currently working on an anti-war novel set on the U.S. Homefront during World War 2. Knowing how that war affected my father inspired me to write an anti-war novel, and this particular story was inspired by a magazine article published during the war about a monster living in a lake in Idaho that was devouring cows whole.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in a room I call my jester room, which is decorated by art depicting fools and all kinds of objects depicting jesters, fools, and harlequins. Great inspiration.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Too many to mention. Seems every book or author influences me one way or another – sometimes favorably, sometimes now.
What are you working on now?
The anti-war novel I mentioned earlier. Also working on two photo journalistic projects.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am an idiot when it comes to this. I need to get a plan – and then learn how to do it.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Make up stories. Lots and lots and lots of them.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your imagination is the best friend you’ll ever have. (Advice I gave to myself as a lonely child.)
What’s next for you as a writer?
Publishing a photo series I did in which I asked combat vets and those who have worked with them one question: What should we know about war?
What is your favorite book of all time?
Impossible to narrow so many wonderful books down to one favorite.
