Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am an American fiction author who has written a few genres: science fiction/fantasy, fantasy, contemporary romance crossover, historical romance and mystery/detective romance. I have currently written 20 novels.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest available title is Murder By Dissent. It is my second mystery/detective romance novel. For this genre, I pick an era and use that as a guide as to how the plot will unfold. Since Murder By Dissent is set in the 1960s, naturally the Civil Rights movement and great leaders during this decade would heavily influence it. The characters I try to create organically and so far the protagonists are black female detectives with European husbands. Racial politics permeates American culture since its inception so that had to be an integral part of Murder By Dissent as well.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to write with particular pens if I am not typing my novel. I usually keep a small stock of them nearby.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The authors which have generally influenced me are John Steinbeck, WEB Dubois and Jane Austen.
What are you working on now?
I am considering another standalone (historical) mystery/detective romance novel.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have only been doing my own promotion and marketing for my currently available titles for a few months now and have not yet been able to determine the best method in promoting my books. I will say that I often use Twitter as far as social media platforms are concerned.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is to write, take your time, get to know your style and become naturally acquainted with the characters you create.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
I am unable to respond in absolutes, but I have heard a few profound pieces of advice.
1. Fail. Fail better, and that
2. You have to crawl before you can walk.
What are you reading now?
The Wayward Haunt. It seems to be a sort of hybrid of magical realism and dystopian novel.
What’s next for you as a writer?
What is next for me as an author is to continue writing.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I don’t think I have a favorite book of all time. I like certain books at different stages/ages in my life.
