Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a business coach and author. Work wise I mainly help service/client businesses who are exchanging time-for-money to productise their service and make more money.
Book wise, I’ve written 5 books. Most notably “Online Business Startup” in 2014 which has been a bestseller on Amazon multiple times over the last 5 years, and more recently “Take Your Shot”
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Take Your Shot is my most recent book.
It was inspired by one of my first coaching clients; a golf professional named Russ, who was suffering a bit in his business to say the least. I took him through a journey of getting committment from his students on their golf game, and focussed on increasing his prices and building a business which he had dreamed about.
It’s told as a parable in a narrative format with Russ as the main character who has a chance meeting with Business Coach, David. David then takes Russ on a coaching journey to turn his business around.
I chose the parable format as I find stories easier to read than “How To” books, and I also wanted to keep it fairly short and punchy at around about 100 pages so that seemed like the most appropriate style.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I dictate all of my content and then use a transcription service to turn it into text.
I find that when I speak it comes across more naturally than when I type. I’ve also found this has helped to speed up the writing process, and so Take Your Shot, whilst being a complicated story only took 5 months to go from idea to publishing.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Mostly business books, but Daniel Pristley’s books are amazing. It was “Entrepreneur Revolution” which started me on my entrepreneur’s journey and introduced me to the world of personal/self-development.
In terms of my work, Eric Reis’ “The Lean Startup” and also “Built to Sell” by Jon Warrillow are both incredibly inspiring.
Other great authors are Napoleon Hill, Steve Chandler, Rich Litvin, Dan Meredith, Richard Fenton and Adrea Waltz, Jeff Cox, and Gay Hendricks. All have inspired me with their books.
What are you working on now?
I have another book in draft format, which is called “Fearless Business” which is all of my coaching tools that I’ve developed over the last 3 years in one book.
I’m aiming to have it ready for the summer. People have been asking about it since I launched Take Your Shot so it’s about time I brought it into the world!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I find that getting into Facebook Groups and LinkedIn and answering people’s questions, providing advice and value is a great way to start the conversation and then I’ll either point them in the direction of my books or offer to send a free copy.
I’ve found that getting reviews is a great way of stimulating sales on the platforms where they sell.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
When you start writing, just get your first draft out as quickly as you can!
Don’t start finessing it and editing it before the draft is finished, otherwise, you’ll never finish it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your first chapter or two will always be terrible compared to the first so don’t beat yourself up when you start editing it.
Someone also once said that, “If you’re thinking about writing a book it would be selfish not to write it and keep your ideas to yourself!”
What are you reading now?
Right now I’m listening to The Big Short which is all about the market crash in 2007/08 and how a small group of people bet against the housing market before the bubble popped.
What’s next for you as a writer?
Just keep on writing, plublish the Fearless Business book and then write a sequel to Take Your Shot. That’s my writing plan for 2019.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Built to Sell by John Warrilow
