Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up in a town so small (pop. 170!) that the little town of Fairview where my series is set seems like the big city to me. For many years, I was the editor of a small town’s daily newspaper, so I understand the rhythms of small-town life. If you’re from a small town, you’ll feel like you’ve been to Fairview before. If you’re from a larger city, don’t be surprised if you start yearning for small-town life.
A little bit more about me: I have an awesome Dutch husband, two grown kids and two sweet and adorable grandchildren. I like to cook and I bake sourdough bread for my husband every week because he misses European bread. I like to go for long bike rides out in the country in the summer, and that’s where I do my best thinking! There’s a little bit of me in most of my characters.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I’m about to publish the fifth book in the series, “Crazy Little Thing.” All my books take place in the fictional town of Fairview. Each book stands alone, but if you read them in order, you’ll catch up with the characters in previous books as they have babies, advance their careers, etc. As long as I keep writing this series, you’ll always be able to keep up with your favorite characters. Everybody seems to love Molly, the protagonist of the first one, “Worth the Wait.” The main character in “Crazy Little Thing” is Ashley. She’s been in every book! I’m now writing one called “The Laws of Attraction,” and Molly is her landlord!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wake up, walk across the room into my adjoining dressing room/writing room, and turn on the computer. Then I make some coffee and start writing until my brain is empty. Then I take a bike ride or walk and think about things, come home, shower, and write some more!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I was an English minor. I’ve always read a lot. I was that kid who read books while the rest of the family was watching TV. I read everything: the classics, genres, non-fiction, everything. Life is too short to limit yourself!
What are you working on now?
I’m half-way through “The Laws of Attraction.” We met Sheriff Watkins in the very first book in the series. He saved the day for Molly when she was in trouble. Now he’s back, and he’s falling for Kelly. The two of them went to high school, but she left town for a decade. Now she’s back, and only upon her return does he realize what a terrible thing he did to her, without realizing it, all those years ago. He wants to make it up to her, but as it turns out, they end up helping each other.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I am always open to suggestions. I’m better at writing than promoting.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write, write, write. Read, read, read. I think most of us would agree with that.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Another author told me the best use of my time is writing the books. It’s easy to get busy doing related things, and many other things are also important, but I prioritize writing.
What are you reading now?
“Notes From the Underground.” I’m sorry it’s not in my genre!
What’s next for you as a writer?
At some point, I’d like to fulfill my high school classmates’ prediction that I would write The Great American Novel.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I could never choose one. But some contenders would be “Lord of the Rings,” anything by Joan Didion, anything by Cormac McCarthy (especially “The Road”!) Also, “The Once and Future King” and “Forever Amber” and “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” and as for non-fiction, “Guns, Germs and Steel.” Can’t forget Diana Gabaldon; she’s great. Oh, why am I even trying to narrow it down???
