About Swedish Again: a memoir of motherhood and identity by Anna Dahland
Between them, Anna and her second husband have eleven children. When he dies four years after their divorce, Anna faces a choice: continue her peaceful empty-nester life in Seattle or fly to Stockholm to parent his children. She loves the children, but she doesn’t like Sweden. She left at age six and has vowed never to move back. Would she even be able to function in Sweden after forty-five years?
Compelled to comfort the children she once called her own, she tells herself she’ll stay ninety days. Maybe if she makes a quick exit, the ghosts of her past won’t be able to catch her. Maybe she can just go on with her life and leave the uncomfortable feelings of Sweden in her past.
Then she remembers the promise she made to a little boy years before.
