Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have been twice traditionally published in the young adult genre by Macmillan and am now writing romantic suspense as a hybrid author. I live with a family that includes teen children and a highly-strung dog who loves cheese. I’ve lived on four continents which has led to a varied – and odd – mix of job experiences: an advertising sales rep, a ski chalet chef, a late night news reader for the BBC and the CEO of an internet company, but writing books is my true love. I’m currently working on my PhD in Creative Writing while tutoring undergraduates and writing more novels. When I’m not writing or teaching, I’m vaguely training for triathlons in the hope that they will compensate for the fact I spend ten hours a day sitting on my tushie.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Heartless Tide – and I was inspired to write it after hearing about the girl teens who solo sailed the world (Abby Sunderland and Jessica Watson to name two).
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write the first draft without stopping for much food or sleep at all – which is for about three weeks. It needs a lot of editing after that though, but the story is there.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Sidney Sheldon, Danielle Steele, Nicolas Sparks, Nora Roberts.
What are you working on now?
A magical realism novel which is part of my pHd.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook
Do you have any advice for new authors?
It’s a really long haul so you must love it to stay in it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
When you’re about to hit that submit button to a publisher/agent then stop – go through the manuscript one more time and delete 20 words off EACH page without exception. It tightens up the writing beautifully, though it will take a week to do!
What are you reading now?
Mists of the Serengeti, Leyla Attah
What’s next for you as a writer?
Another romantic suspense series…
What is your favorite book of all time?
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
