Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I was born in London in the winter of 1965 and it took over half a century for me to get round to writing a book – although a couple of stints as a rock guitarist, a decade overseas and the launch, growth and sale of a corporate business had kept me sufficiently busy until that point.
Fast forward to today and I am happily married, living on the Wirral with Karen and my four beautiful daughters.
Deadly Illusions is my debut novel and I really hope enough people like it so that I may be encouraged to write more.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My book is titled Deadly Illusions and I was inspired whilst watching the magician Dynamo performing an illusion whereby it appeared he was standing at 90 degrees on the side of a wall without anything appearing to hold him up. Passers by were awestruck and I thought what if it wasn’t a clever illusion and he could simply do that because he had super-powers or something – the joke would be on us. The thought stayed with me and I developed a plot whereby a lot of magicians were in fact extra-terrestrial and they had a nasty plan which wasn’t great for the future of our species. I won’t tell you any more, because I don’t want to spoil the book for you.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
When I wrote Deadly Illusions I treated it as a job and left the house first thing in the morning and came back at dinner time. I became quite a fixture within the coffee shop scene in my local area!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Dan Brown’s conspiracy theory stories are great and I thought if I could add some humour in the style of Douglas Adams when he wrote Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy I’d be onto a winner (hopefully).
What are you working on now?
A sequel with the gang from Deadly Illusions teaming up once more.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m hoping this one.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Yes. Be prepared to put in some hard yards, both during the writing process and then through the edit, publishing and marketing. But its worth it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write drunk, edit sober. Just kidding… but my writing process was to spend an hour or two each morning editing the free-flow writing from the day before.
What are you reading now?
The Dark Heart by Joakim Palmkvist. A great true crime novel from a talented Swedish author (and good personal friend).
What’s next for you as a writer?
I am currently plotting the sequel to Deadly Illusions and next year I intend to get cracking with writing it.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Stark by Ben Elton. It may not have been the most critically acclaimed novel ever written but I still recall how much I laughed when I read it the first time.
