Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a hybrid romance author (meaning I published traditionally with Kensington) and I also am self-published! My 6th book, The Lady is Trouble, is arriving in February 2020. I also have a new release, a holiday novella — Tides of Desire — that came out about two weeks ago.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Tides of Desire is the final in the Garrett Brothers trilogy. I wrote the first two a few years back — and readers continued to ask about Caleb, the middle brother I had not written a love story for. The books are set in the Outer Banks, NC in 1898, so a bit unusual setting-wise. (I’m a native southerner.) I was so glad to finally have Caleb’s story out there!
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I think every writer has their own way of creating. Any artist, I should say. I typically write, then when I begin the next day, I go back a page or so and edit. My first draft is rough — but maybe not as rough as a writer who just puts it all out there in the first run. I like to edit online AND do hard-copy edits. I also read most of it aloud when I run back through (at some point).
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Easy question! My first romance ever was LyVyrle Spencer’s VOWS. Still a solid fav of mine. I also really admire Judith Ivory (who bought me a coffee once at RWA). What a writer!
Currently, I’m loving Tessa Dare, Meredith Duran, Liz Carlyle, Julie Anne Long, Roni Loren, ETC. I’m a huge reader of the genre.
What are you working on now?
The second in the League of Lords series. The first arrives in Feb 2020! It’s a new series and setting for me as I usually stay in the South.
This is set in Victorian England. And it includes elements of magical realism. A viscount who has supernatural abilities. (Think mind-reading type stuff.) Light, not super/duper paranormal or anything.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Bookbub is a good one, for sure!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just write. Read in the genre you love. Read craft books:
On Writing–Stephen King
Bird by Bird — Anne Lamott
ETC
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Nora Roberts once told me to have “patience” as a new writer. So I think I’ll go with that!
What are you reading now?
Amy Andrews–The Trouble with Christmas
What’s next for you as a writer?
To keep writing and stay happy with the creative process.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Maybe Black Silk–Judith Ivory. Or Vows, as I mentioned earlier.
