Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Michelle E. Lowe and I’m the author of seven published novels, The Warning, Atlantic Pyramid, Cherished Thief, and Legacy. Children’s books, Poe’s Haunted House Tour, and The Hex Hunt series. I keep myself busy raising two girls and being a momma to October, my eighteen year old calico cat. I’m a nerd at heart who enjoys watching science fiction, fantasy and classic horror movies. I also dabble in oil painting. Currently, I live in Lake Forest, California with my husband, Ben
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
I’ve recently released a steampunk/fantasy novel, Legacy, a rollicking adventure that takes place in Victorian England during the rise of the Industrial Revolution. Legacy is the first of a six book series and published through Nordland Publishing.
Book blurb:
A thief, a lover, and a toymaker; drawn together by fate, unlikely champions against a powerful and remorseless enemy. When not fighting each other, they must defeat the powerful Lord Norwich, and end his plan to unleash global violence and crown himself emperor of the world.
No problem.
But behind the scenes, the Trickster god is manipulating men like puppets, changing history to his own ends and for his own amusement. As an ancient plan is set into motion, the trio are face with events they do not understand and may not survive.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I wouldn’t really call it unusual, but I guess it’s not a common practice nowadays. I write my books in longhand. I feel that when I jot them down first in a notebook and then type it out next, I write the stories better because I’m pretty much writing the same story a second time where I have a better grasp on the characters and plot.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Neil Gaiman is one author. I adore his magical ways to spin yarns and tell in depth stories. Chris Wooding is another. His fast-pace yet extremely well-written tales are something I can’t get enough of. I’m also partial to Dean Koontz, who, in my personal opinion has an outstanding knack in crafting suspense stories.
What are you working on now?
Even though only the first of the Legacy books has been published, the entire series have been completely written. This has freed me up to expand on the story. Right now, I’m in the process of writing a standalone book for Legacy titled Boom Time.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook is a good way to circulate news. Titter too. I’ve even opened a twitter account just for Legacy. @LegacySeries_6. Goodreads is also a good resource for writers. I plan to run a Goodreads contest soon as a means to draw more attention to Legacy. My website is a very good way to give out information about me and my books.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
First and foremost, write what you love. Don’t follow trends, write for yourself. Write your first draft with as much passion as you can muster. Letting yourself go completely in that first draft without worrying so much about perfection, will set your imagine and the story free. There’s plenty of time during the dreaded ‘editing stage’ to fret about making it pretty. First drafts ought to be free spirits, but they’re also supposed to look ugly. And never rush through your writing just to get something published. Take your time and polish your work until it shines like the gold you want it to be. Even if takes a year or more, it’s best to present your best work rather than publish some subpar, clutter junk. And take constructive criticism with a grain of salt. You’d be amazed just how your writing will flourish and progress if you simply listen to opinions and learn from your mistakes. Trust me, we’ve all gone through it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Have the courage to live a life true to yourself, not the life others expect of you.”
Good advice, especially since it can be difficult for some.
What are you reading now?
The Aeronaut’s Windlass (The Cinder Spires, #1) by Jim Butcher. I’ve just started on it and already I’m excited about the story.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I have lots of plans actually. I’m going to finish writing Boom Time and then move on to turning three of my novels into TV series screenplays to pitch around to different studios. Dream big, right? I will soon launch a Kickstarter campaign and work in raising funding to turn Legacy into an audio book. Loads to do.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I don’t think I really have a favorite, every novel I’ve read and liked, I’ve liked them for different reasons. Yet if I had to choose, I’d have to say Retribution Falls, by Chris Wooding.
