Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
After college graduation, Alan spent over twenty years as a law enforcement officer. During his career, he served as a Special Deputy US Marshal taking him to several European countries and the Middle East. Alan spent two years living in Germany while working with the US Army.
Finishing law school, he served as prosecutor then a criminal defense attorney for twelve years before joining the Texas prison and parole agency as an assistant general counsel. Upon retirement, Alan ventured into writing crime fiction, having ten crime novels published.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest novel is When Things Fall Apart. My inspiration for this book came from my years as a law enforcement officer being partnered with a minority officer. Having the book set in Fort Worth arose from my ten years practicing criminal defense there.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if sixths qualifies as unusual but I like to listen to music while writing and sipping scotch.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
The first author who inspired me was Michael McGarrity with his police procedurals and Michael Connelly with his Harry Bosch series. Next came Lee Gimenez with the Rachel West series. Elle Gray followed with her Blake Wilder series.
What are you working on now?
I am working on the third book in the Claire Deveraux series which will be set in both Paris, France, and Fort Worth, Texas.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
The best method I’ve found to-date for promoting my books are several different promotional websites.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
My main bit of advice is to read books in your favorite genre. Don ‘t just read it. Study it. See how that author structured his sentences to slow the pace down and speed it up.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Read, read, and keep reading.
What are you reading now?
An Elle Gray novel from the Blake Wilder series titled The Chosen Girls.
What’s next for you as a writer?
After I finish writing and revising the third book in the Claire Deveraux series, I will start the next book in the Kit Hanover series.
What is your favorite book of all time?
My favorite book of all time is A Time to Kill by John Grisham.
