Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up in Osaka, Japan, as a missionary kid. All of my books have a world-view. I’ve written inspirational novels, cookbooks, and a devotional. My latest book, Life at Daniel’s Place, is a memoir of loss and grief.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My son Daniel was four when he died after cancer treatments. He’s the inspiration for my memoir, Life at Daniel’s Place. He was a generous kid, always giving away stickers in his hospital room. I learned about faith and love from his short life.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to record my thoughts by speaking into a doc on my phone. You can find me at the local park or the cemetery recording my thoughts and ideas for my books.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
C.S. Lewis is a big influence as well as Alice Walker. Alice Walker claimed writing saved her, and it saved me, too. Writing through the pain and suffering after my son Daniel’s death was therapeutic and healing. I promote expressive writing every chance I get!
What are you working on now?
My next book has to do with the power of writing from grief and loss to hope and healing.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I read articles and listen to podcasts on writing all the time. These help me find the best promo sites. I’m always looking to improve my craft. My website, https://alicewisler.com, has tips on writing. I want to give back to my community by helping other writers.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep going! As I write in Life at Daniel’s Place, don’t give up! Surround yourself with those who will boost your dreams.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“Do what is yours to do.” ~ Jeff Goins I have this quote at my desk and it reminds me to continue on with what I need to write to share with the world. Everybody has something worth sharing. Find it, and spread your story.
What are you reading now?
Richard Russo’s memoir, Elsewhere, is the current book I’m reading.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on some YouTube videos that share writing tips. I also hope to finish my current Work-in-Progress soon.
What is your favorite book of all time?
That’s a hard question! Every few years I read my copy of The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I also read Rick Bragg’s All Over But the Shoutin’ and often quote from it when I give writing workshops.
