About Animal Quest
An anthropomorphic fantasy about a group of farm animals trying to survive the bubonic plague in the fourteenth century. From the animal perspective, the novella allegorises the human psyche in response to the Black Death and its effect on the social fabric of Europe at a time when every human or animal was regarded as a threat—a vector of the disease.
The year is 1349 in human time. A death ship drifts helplessly into a port of Tailandia, and death spreads throughout the land thereafter. Big Bertha, a tiny, bossy cat previously led an idyllic life with her dumb companions on Farmer Sven’s farm until the dreaded sickness strikes down the farm. The animals form a fellowship and under the leadership of Big Bertha, abandon the farm and their land to escape the sickness. Their harrowing journey is endless and perilous, incidents piling upon incidents in a desperate struggle for survival. Meeting many characters, both human and animal, it proves increasingly difficult to keep the fellowship together.
