Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve been fascinated with history since I was a boy, and at that young age, I recognized the power of storytelling. How it can be used to teach history by connecting to people with emotionally packed stories. I’ve written four books. My historical fiction novels are: “Forever Fleeting”; “Gone the Way of the Dodo Bird”; “The Winter Tiger & The War Eagle”. My novel, “The Final Edit” is a murder mystery.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is a historical fiction book set during World War II. It’s titled, “The Winter Tiger & The War Eagle.” I was inspired to right this after coming across an article about a female Soviet Sniper named Lyudmila Pavlichenko. She was one of the war’s greatest snipers. The idea of a female soldier isn’t widely known, but many women served in the Soviet Army and performed their duty with skill, bravery, and tenacity.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I create playlists that I visualize as my book’s soundtracks. Different movie themes that help me get in the mood for a scene I’m writing. I’m definitely a “pantser” in my writing style. I plan and outline to a certain degree, but I love the excitement of letting my characters tell me where the plot is going to go.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
My biggest influences are actually movies. I grew up in the ’90’s, so it was a time of great historical dramas: Titanic, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan. These films gave me a love of history and storytelling.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on a historical fiction drama set during two time periods: The Holocaust in 1942 and 1963-64. I have done so much research into the Holocaust, but sadly a lot of research stops in 1945. The tribulations these people faced didn’t end in 1945. The trauma of the horrors they experienced lived with them for the rest of their lives.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use Amazon ads. This certainly isn’t a free method of promotion, but it does allow my books visibility on the world’s largest marketplace.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Many people say they want to write a book. If you’re serious, it should be a need to write a book. It’s a huge time commitment, so be sure you’re willing to put in the work. There will be doubters; ignore them. Believe in yourself.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Your outlook determines your outcome. Expect to have a bad day, you’ll find a reason to have a bad day. Expect to have a great day, and you’ll find reasons to have a great day.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Murder Road by Simone St. James. I’ve read several of her books, and they’re always a great ride.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m diligently working on my fifth novel. My goal is to continue to write and bring my books to a larger audience.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Harry Potter was so instrumental in making me a reader. I stood in lines for the next book. Stayed up late, got up early. I owe a lot to the Harry Potter series. It was the first time I remembered truly disappearing into a book.
