John Hazell

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I have written two poetry books and one fiction story book. I also make music and write my own songs.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Who stole the crown jewels? Was inspired by my love of comedy and I wanted to explore another creative outlet.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not sure if it’s just me, but I tend to jump around and maybe come up with a bit in the middle of the story, then maybe write the ending, then go back to the beginning, and keep on like that until it’s all joined up!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The Hugo Dare series written by David Codd, and the Puzzled series written by P J Nichols

What are you working on now?
A sci fi novel.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
No idea! This is my first time promoting my book!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Just keep at it! Don’t try to force content, and don’t feel you have to write in order. If you think of a predicament for your character, write that, then work out how they get into it afterwards.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Every little achievement should be celebrated.

What are you reading now?
The interstellar detectives book 2

What’s next for you as a writer?
To keep writing, hopefully a bigger book.

What is your favorite book of all time?
The time hunters series by Carl Ashmore

Kyle Anderson

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I grew up in a very small town, and we all know that small towns don’t necessarily promote big dreams and inspiration doesn’t live there. I somehow found a way to use writing as my escape, which started when I came out in my freshman year of high school. I was deeply depressed with how my mom reacted, and thus my talent for writing was found as my release, and it’s been growing ever since. I’ve written fourteen books, ranging from poetry to novellas and full-length novels, and self-published ten of those.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“A Place To Fall” is my first bigger project after taking a six year hiatus to pursue a drag career, which was lucrative! I completely lost myself in that world, so this novella is my baby. Based on true events with fictional elements, I had to write what I knew coming back.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Not that I can think of, I know having my cocktails helps-and my writing playlist playing in the background.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
“Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson stays with me to this day. The way she crafted every sentence was just perfection. I did watch the movie with Kristen Stewart, and it was just as good. Augusten Burroughs was masterful with “Running With Scissors” and I’ve recently been turned on to Riley Sager.

What are you working on now?
I didn’t plan on this, but I am working on the sequel to “A Place To Fall.”

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still figuring that out! Facebook has been my go-to, but this time around I’m exploring more options.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep going and surround yourself with people who won’t blow smoke up your ass.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It’s a Cecil Beaton quote, it goes:
“Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers.”

What are you reading now?
Well, I’m listening to “Final Girls” by Riley Sager and just finished “Rebel Rising” by Rebel Wilson.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Who knows! Definitely want to venture into script writing. I’ve got some other novel ideas to expand on.

What is your favorite book of all time?
I haven’t read/listened to it yet.

Jemima Mori

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m an English writer based in Central Portugal, living something of a double life. By day, I’m a commercial content writer; by night, I become alter ego author Jemima Mori and craft strange, liminal fiction! My debut novella PARKING is out now.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The initial concept for PARKING was born from a conversation many years ago about whether there might be a fetish that doesn’t exist on the internet. From that decidedly quirky launching point, my aim became to build a surreal but familiar contained world that holds few of the stressors of modern life, inhabited by a cast of characters upon which readers can project their own ideas and identities. I hoped to create a sense for the reader that they are not only solving mysteries with the protagonist but also evolving alongside them.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
My constant writing companion is a deaf cat named Yoshie. She likes to yodel and break dance, which is perfect entertainment for my writing breaks.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
The authors I cherish and return to the most are Hillary Raphael and Banana Yoshimoto. I’m a particular fan of contemporary Japanese fiction, and Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, The Lonesome Bodybuilder by Yukiko Motoya, and In the Miso Soup by Ryū Murakami spring to mind as favourites from my bookshelves.

What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on a collection of surreal short stories that I hope to release in early 2025. I’m also developing the outline for my next novella.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m focusing the most on community building, using social media to connect with people who favour a kindred aesthetic and life perspective. Both my commercial and fiction writing are very much centred around the importance of authentic human connection – I believe that’s essentially what we serve as creatives and that it’s vital for both us and our readers!

Do you have any advice for new authors?
It’s a daunting thing to put your unique voice out there in the world, but nobody else can do it the way you can. So I say, hit your marks for diligence – be sure to prioritise quality editing, formatting, and design – but beyond that, just play and experiment; enjoy creation for its own sake, and then fling what you’ve made out into the ether.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Be brave! A dear friend gave me a quick crash course in self-hypnosis to get me over the last few fear hurdles ahead of getting my book finished and setting it free. Happily, there are plenty of tools and tricks to help us shed whatever is holding us back, so find the right lever to liberate your brave self and pull it.

What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading A Life Unwrapped by Diane von Furstenberg.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m working on a collection of short stories alongside my next novella. While my writing doesn’t seem to fit neatly into any particular genre, I’m definitely chasing a feeling. It’s a medley of strangeness and comfort – something both edgy and uplifting. I’m a big fan of duality!

What is your favorite book of all time?
My favourite book of all time is I Love Lord Buddha by Hillary Raphael. It is not only a cultish thrill ride of a tale, but Raphael elegantly demonstrates the art of throwing the literary rule book out of the window. The entire novel is in lowercase bar the name of the central character, and chapters jump between a dizzying spectrum of character voices and formats. It’s a zany and addictive read that I return to again and again.

Cat Collins

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hey, I’m Cat. I’m a reading interventionist for Dyslexic students by day and a writer of romance with humor, heart, and heat by night, weekends, holidays, and sometimes in the bathroom. I’ve written lots of books, but I have published five, soon to be seven. I’m getting ready to release the fourth and final book in my Diminishing Magic series soon, as well as an unhinged rom-com within the next couple of months.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Wood. It’s what I’m calling an “unhinged spicy novella” based on Pinocchio. I was inspired when someone asked for a Pinocchio rec in a Facebook group I’m in. Nobody could provide her one, so I thought, hm. I wonder if I could write that. My very first (naughty) thought was, “I could write that, but it would not be his nose that grows.” It was stupidly easy for me to take some of the elements of Pinocchio and add them into the book. For example, the Blue Fair, Cat and Fox, the circus and the whale are all in there in some capacity. The premise required a day or two of thinking, but once I decided how to set it up where it was his “not the nose” that grows, it literally took me a week to write it. It was a blast!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if I’d call it unusual, but I always get a good idea of the beginning, midway turning point, and end in mind, write 3-4 chapters to get a feel for the voice, then go back and write the blurb. Writing the blurb before the bulk of the book is a trick I learned and it has revolutionized how I blurb. It makes it so much easier to do it first. There ya go, authors. A free tip for you.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
i would say first Madeleine L’Engle as she is the author that got me into reading in school. My college journalism professor, Mr. Duncan who told me I was great at descriptive writing, but couldn’t be as forceful as I needed to be for a career in Journalism. The first book I attempted to write came directly after I closed the book, Divergent by Veronica Roth. Something about that book spoke to my inner writer. It made me believe I could do it, so I opened up my laptop and did. From there, I’d say all the contemporary authors I read now influence me in some way.

What are you working on now?
Getting Wood launched, the final edits of Ripples of Glass, the final book in the Diminishing Magic series, and I’m also writing the second book in my Curse of Between series. As soon as school is out for the summer, I’ll add my next Why Choose Christmas romance in the mix too. Because my time is limited, I plan way ahead and usually work on multiple things at once.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Fussy Librarian, Book Mojo, Facebook ads, and sites like this one. I love stacking my promos during launch week and when I do special deals.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Like I said before: write the blurb first. Other than that, don’t let other authors’ successes or failures slow you down. Your book will be unique and find its readers. Comparing yourself to others leads to a lot of resentment and heartache. Find the story you want to tell and tell it. Don’t worry about the market or genre or tropes.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Have I mentioned the thing about writing the blurb first? Yeah, that.

What are you reading now?
Nothing at the moment and it is KILLING me. I plan to finally dive into Zodiac Academy 9 as soon as I hit my writing goal for this week. It’s one of my favorite series and I have put it off in favor of writing and wrapping up my school year. I cannot wait to see how it turns out in the end. I’m a bit amazed I haven’t read any spoilers yet.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Next, I will keep writing. It may seem basic, but it’s the only way to get to my goals. I would love to be able to write full-time, to make enough that I can dedicate my whole day to writing. I’m not there yet, so I keep writing until I am or until I need to stop. I have several series ongoing and a couple more in the planning stages and I can’t wait to bring those characters and worlds to life.

What is your favorite book of all time?
This question is just mean! I will always mention A Wrinkle in Time as it got me into reading at a very young age. As far as anything else goes, I’m a mood reader and it would depend on the mood of the day.

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’ve traveled to 49 out of 50 United States, with Alaska next up! After exploring America for a year, I settled in sunny, sandy Florida, the inspiration for a series of romance novels set on the Atlantic coast. Satin Romance has published the first three in the Salem Crossing series: Riptide, Sandcastles, and Driftwood, with the fourth novel coming this fall–Hurricane. I’ve also published American Royalty, a steamy princess romance novel from Totally Bound Publishing, as well as the hot thriller, iii, on Vella.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The latest in my Salem Crossing series is Book 3: Driftwood. It was inspired by my youth at Grandma’s house watching Days of Our Lives. This story in a soap opera without anyone pumping the brakes on the content–steamy and saucy!

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I read everything from Pride and Prejudice to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies–basically, gimme some Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, please.

What are you working on now?
Book 4: Hurricane of my Salem Crossing series comes out this fall. I’m finishing the first draft of Book 5. I also am wrapping up the first draft on a cozy romance set in the Midwest.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up. Find an idea that would make YOU interested as a reader. Take the reader on a ride–in my case, it would be on a surf board.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Life is short. Spend as much time on the beach as you can.

What are you reading now?
Throwback time: The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. Classic romance.

What’s next for you as a writer?
I would love to be successful enough to travel AND write.

What is your favorite book of all time?
To Kill a Mockingbird

Maxine Flam

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi, My name is Maxine and Unglorious War Revised Edition is my first book I have written although I did revise it from its original form. I just had my second book accepted for publication but I don’t have a date that it is coming out. I have written one western script and had several short stories published.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Unglorious War Revised Edition was inspired by all the Veterans I have known throughout my life and writing a story that showed the horrors of war from two people who met and fell in love because of it. So many of our Veterans came back missing limbs or having psychological problems and so many more didn’t return at all.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write with the TV on in the background. I can’t write in silence. I usually write for hours at a time, take a food break, and go back to writing some more. I have to be inspired. If there isn’t anything in the tank or as I say the well is dry, I can’t force it. Then I work on pitching other work for publication or editing something I have already written.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I can’t say one particular author has influenced me. I research my work before writing so if I have an idea for a story, I get books from the library and pour over the material until I come up with an angle to write the story.

What are you working on now?
I am editing my script to turn it into a novel and I am trying to complete the last two stories I want to write in a series of detective stories that take place in the late 1970s. I have already had a few of them published but I want to publish all of them in order in a small book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Facebook and looking for websites that will allow me to let people know I have a book on sale. I try to tell people I write and when I have a short story coming out, I have an email list that I notify them with the link.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Keep plugging away. Don’t give up. It’s really hard unless you have an in within the book industry or entertainment industry. If you do, use it.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
It was an anonymous quote. What does a writer fear most? Someone will read their work or someone won’t read their work. You got to believe in you. Keep plugging.

What are you reading now?
Just finished a book called Love and Poison. Excellent read but I don’t have a new book yet.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Nothing. Keep doing what I’ve been doing.

What is your favorite book of all time?

Leila Rivers

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
This is my first published book, although I have a prolific blog. I began writing several years ago after the sudden death of my husband, and it’s just evolved tremendously. I went from a blog to published articles, to lengthy posts to a book! And here I am. I hope you enjoy my work. I’m just getting started.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My first and latest book, “The Narcissistic Tangle, ” was inspired by my own accounts growing up. I had no idea what I was living through, although I knew it absolutely wasn’t normal. I found a sanctuary in my husband of 23 years. It wasn’t until he died in 2020 that I started researching and labeling the trauma that I lived and was still living within my family dynamic. This propelled me to reach out, only to discover my story was not unique. So, my book is to inspire, educate, and help facilitate recovery for those suffering in the same relationship dynamics.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Well, I wouldn’t call them unusual. I take days to be creative, and then there are days to be productive and fiscally responsible. Then, there are days to decompress and just “be.” All are separate and I find when I define a day, it’s usually hard to switch into another mode.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love science fiction, although that doesn’t influence my writing per se. I have mentors who have influenced me along the way in my writing, one being my Auntie Marian. She writes sci-fi but has always been a hugely influential figure in my life from my early teens upward. I am me, and I’ve developed most of my writing on my own through love and the loss of my spouse.

What are you working on now?
Right now, I am working on a companion workbook for my book “The Narcissistic Tangle.” After that, I have planned a second book for readers of a different age. This first book was written for adults seeking validation and understanding of the situation they grew up in. My second book will deal with young adults and later teens/early 20somethings who are still in family narcissistic dynamics. It will encompass understanding, dealing with the situation, and learning how to heal themselves.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I just try to direct everyone to the amazon page where you can download my book or purchase if you want a printed copy. I am relentless about posting on Instagram and Facebook. Those who follow my blog and resonate with my message will be my supporters.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Wow, it’s so hard, I will say follow your gut. Do what feels right. I had to write and rewrite many things, from my author bio to my copywriting to my book description; it’s all part of the process. Learn it all. Do. It. All. Then farm out what you don’t enjoy or can’t do well to those who can do it better, and don’t be afraid to tell them no….it’s not good enough. This is your word, heart, feeling, and what you want to convey. Never, ever compromise.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Move on, and don’t become emotionally invested. I still have a hard time with that being my first book, but my mentors have said that in the end, not every book will succeed. You can give it your all, and it still fails. Don’t take it personally. Treat it like a business, and so I shall, and so should you.

What are you reading now?
Currently I am reading “Many Lives, Many Masters” by Brian L. Weiss, M.D. It was recommended to me and I am absolutely enjoying it. I will definitely read more of his work. I am also reading “The Art Of Happiness” by His Holiness The Dalai Lama and Howard C. Cutler, M.D.

What’s next for you as a writer?
My next venture will be the companion workbook to “The Narcissistic Tangle,” which will help those desiring comfort and healing in traumatic situations. The workbook is a companion yet stand-alone book that inspires self-awareness and facilitates the healing process without the use of a therapist.

Then, I’ll embark on the second book to address those in their late teens/early 20s, something that is in narcissistic entrapment and seeking understanding, self healing, recovery and relief from their situation.

What is your favorite book of all time?
This is such a telling question. My favorite book of all time has to be “Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury. As I’ve said, I’ve always been a science fiction fan, and reading this in my junior year of high school completely transformed my thoughts on literature. Until then, I had never read or heard anything so provocative or controversial in my short life. It made me question who I was and what I believed in and analyze everything moving forward. I lived in this sort of Utopian paradise, and the more books I consumed, the more questions I had. Mind you I have to tell you I am of Generation X, so questioning the very reality of everything became our nature.

Debbie Regan Cleveland

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Debbie Regan Cleveland is a retired non-profit Executive Director, blogger, author, free-lance writer, volunteer, historian, and collector of vintage photos and ephemera. She co-founded two neighborhood groups and was designated a “Hometown Hero” as an advocate for her section of town.

Debbie has been a published author beginning in high school when she was selected to be the student reporter for an area Massachusetts newspaper, The Lowell Sun. She was a columnist for her college newspaper, and just about everywhere she was employed, she used her writing skills in newsletters and marketing pieces.

Grandmother’s Trunk Press, her company, grew out of Grandmother’s Trunk, her consignment shop full of antiques, collectibles, unique items, and vintage clothing. Debbie published brochures and booklets as part of promoting the shop. She also was invited to write feature articles for trade antiques periodicals.

When she and a fellow dealer launched New England’s first Vintage Clothing Show and Sale, they published a companion newsletter, The Vintage Gazette, reporting on the vintage clothing market and East Coast Vintage Clothing Shows.

Debbie worked full and part-time in public libraries for 20 years. At one point she was the Local Store Marketing Coordinator for 13 corporate McDonald’s restaurants, using her ideas and promotional skills when introducing new products and new stores.

For several years she was the owner and webmaster of Framingham.com, one of the first community websites in the U.S. and still online. She is a long-time volunteer at the Framingham History Center and blogs about being a senior citizen on her blog 50plusses.com.

She enjoys shopping at thrift and consignment and vintage shops, especially looking for interesting photographs and ephemera. She has created some books and digital products using her finds.

She has published several books. One of significance is a memoir of a Massachusetts Legislator who championed women’s, gay, and the underdog’s rights.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
How Shadowchaser Got His Name: A Cat Tale. This is my first children’s book and it took me 34 years to write and publish it. It is loosely based upon an incident in my family when my children were young.

There really was a Shadowchaser.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I write in my mind when I can’t sleep.
I may jot notes in my phone for later.
I like writing longhand, but typing gets my ideas down quicker.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
I have four grandchildren and noticed what keeps their attention. That helped me to better choose my words and format the book. I also worked in public libraries for about 20 years, often in the children’s department and noticed what kids tended to like.

One would be Dr. Seuss, for the bright colors and simple illustrations on each page. The illustrations for Shadowchaser are simple, without a lot of backgrounds.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a sequel to How Shadowchaser Got His Name. Working title is: The Trouble with Shadowchaser. As he is a life-like stuffed cat, he is sometimes mistaken for a real cat. That’s when there’s trouble.

I am also working on a non-fiction book: So You Really Want to Buy A Cabin in the Woods. We own a cabin in Maine and there’s the dream and then there’s the reality, which I will share in the book.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Hmmm…well, I use my website, which is GrandmothersTrunk.com, and my blog, which is 50plusses.com, which is about the joys of being 50 plus and I mention my books. I also use Facebook. I also carry business cards with a picture of the book cover and a QR code for where to buy the book on Amazon on the back. I hand them out, which is working better than just telling people.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t give up and don’t do it alone. Even though I wrote free-lance articles and newsletters, etc. for years, writing a book is different. I signed up for several paid and free writing summits or webinars and took copious notes. I credit them with helping me with the title and the book cover, as well as the book structure. I used a lot of the words and ideas I had written down years ago, but used them better. I had a librarian and educators critique my book and their suggestions helped me over humps and better use words. It takes a village.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Don’t go it alone. Seek and ask for advice.

What are you reading now?
I read mostly mysteries and thrillers. But right now I am reading Table for Two by Amor Towles. I am in awe of his craftsmanship and versatility.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Hmm…beyond the sequel and the book about owning a cabin, I have a few other children’s book ideas.
I also love Maine and may do a book about my experiences as a “PFA” – “Person from Away” and how enriching it has been to be in DownEast Maine.

What is your favorite book of all time?
Perhaps Gone with the Wind.
I have trouble picking favorites or bests.

Preston K. de Laura

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Guided by the visionary works of authors like Isaac Asimov, Philip K. Dick, and the Strugatsky brothers, I’ve been immersed in the world of science fiction for many years. A chance meeting with Robert Sheckley in 2004 further fueled my passion for the genre.

I share my life with a wonderful family, including my wife and a grown-up daughter, who inspire my storytelling with their own adventures. My focus is on crafting imaginative stories that transport readers to uncharted dimensions and evoke the wonder of speculative fiction.

I have several novellas and short stories published on various platforms.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
“Mission: Unknown” is a tale of survival, betrayal, and the resilience of the human spirit in adversity. This short story is also an attempt to explore the shadowy recesses of the human psyche, where the grim and often contorted facets of our essence lurk, waiting to be unearthed and brought to light.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I find that writing in the very early morning, when the world is still quiet, sparks my creativity. It’s an unusual habit, but the tranquility of dawn offers a unique perspective that I infuse into my storytelling.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Robert Sheckley has been a significant influence on my approach to storytelling, especially with his masterful blend of humor and speculative thought. His collection “Untouched by Human Hands” features stories that challenge the ordinary, such as “The Monsters” and “The Impacted Man.” Robert Sheckley’s stories often play with paradoxes and social satire, revealing the absurdities of our world through a lens that is both alien and intimately familiar.

What are you working on now?
I am working on a short story titled “Door,” with the aim of completing it by early summer. It delves into the theme of alien contact.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
My approach to book promotion is experimental and dynamic. I’m currently exploring a variety of platforms to discover which ones resonate most with my target audience.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
My advice for new authors is to be persistent and open to learning. Writing is a craft that requires patience and practice, so keep writing, keep reading, and never be afraid to revise.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
The most impactful guidance I’ve received is to author the book that I, myself, would be eager to read. This philosophy guarantees that my work is infused with genuine enthusiasm and sincerity, qualities that truly connect with my readership.

What are you reading now?
I’m immersed in Kyla Stone’s “Edge of Collapse.” It’s a fascinating exploration of the lengths to which humanity will go when pushed to the brink.

What’s next for you as a writer?
As a writer, my horizon is set on the creation of a full-fledged sci-fi series that intertwines the allure of mystery with the boundless possibilities of speculative fiction. It’s an endeavor that beckons me to chart a course through the enigmatic and the extraordinary, crafting worlds that captivate the imagination.

What is your favorite book of all time?
Choosing a single favorite is a challenge, but the authors who have left an indelible mark on me include Gabriel García Márquez with his magical realism, Stephen King’s unparalleled mastery of suspense, Umberto Eco’s historical narratives, and Brandon Sanderson’s epic world-building. Each has contributed uniquely to my love for literature and continues to inspire my own writing journey.
