Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Hi! (waving)
My name is D. V. Stone, but you can call me D. Since publishing my first book in 2017, I’ve eked out ten books, both Traditionally and Independently published. Since I read all sorts of genres, that’s how I write. My stories are from Mid-Grade up, and all in the G-PG range.
It’s all about family, friends, love, and adventure.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is coming out March 16th, 2023. A group of fellow authors and I got together and came up with a series called The Mortar & Pestle Series. Just like me the books range from genre to genre. Sea Hunter is my first historical, (post WWII) action/adventure, romance. It takes place of the coast of New England and an underwater archeologist searching for a lost pirate ship.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
There are several things. First, I have a toy sword in my office, which I brandish when I’m choreographing fantasy fight scenes. My neighbors, if they saw, would think I’m crazy. I also keep some items related to my books. For instance, Sea Hunter, I have a mortar and pestle. For my next release after that, I have a pair of John Lennon round glasses like my main character Calliope wears in Sophia’s Magic Beans.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I adore LOTR and The Hobbit. Tolkien is a major influence along with C. S. Lewis. The list could go on, but really, I think any book your read leaves traces behind. Sometimes good and sometimes difficult. Any time you open your mind and heart to an author’s words they are bound to influence and inspire you.
What are you working on now?
As I mentioned, Sophia’s Magic Beans will release in April. I have several manuscripts in the works. A nearly finished work of a Christmas story with some familiar characters from Lake Unami where Rainbow Sprinkles and Sophia’s Magic Beans take place. I’m also working on editing a fantasy book started many years ago.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I adore N. N. Lights, Book Heaven. They are wonderful to work with. I’ve recently discovered Shepherd and started using Fussy Librarian.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Perseverance and tough skin are essential to a writer. Being an author isn’t just writing books and having everyone love them. Rejection and hard reviews are a reality. Not that your book is bad, but not every book is for everyone. Also, it’s so important to get the best editor you can afford. Whether you are publishing indie or submitting to a publisher your work needs to be tight.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write the next book. Book reading has become like Netflix. Readers binge on series and tropes.
What are you reading now?
I’m reading Rescuing Jellybean by Nikki Pascarella.
What’s next for you as a writer?
To keep my nose to the grindstone. Writing and editing is a way of life for me.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. It’s been a favorite since childhood. I still have a copy on my shelf.
