Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
My name is Danielle and I currently live in Washington Heights, NYC with my cats Mojo and Magnus. In my spare time I’m usually blogging, binge watching mindless tv, or reading. As for books I’ve written, I have just the one which was self-published in October. It’s a memoir chronicling the years I spent in an abusive relationship.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The name of my memoir is From Voiceless To Vocal. I’d been writing in my head for a while and giving snippets of my life on my blog, but last June the words starting flowing through my head and before I knew it the first few chapters were written. After that a day didn’t go by where I wasn’t writing it until the whole thing was finished.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like writing while sitting on the floor. I don’t know what it is, but something about sitting on the floor by the window helped me write and I wrote some of my best stuff sitting there.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
This is a tough one because I don’t think I’ve ever been directly influenced by a specific book or author. I definitely have things that have maybe pushed me in one direction or another, but it’s hard to say if there’s a specific book that I’ve read and gone, “Wow, I need to do this!”
What are you working on now?
I have a few stories I’ve started but I’m waiting for them to speaking to me a bit more before diving back in. Right now I’ve been focusing on the blog a bit more and just trying to ramp up my readership.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
Book promotion is the one thing I’ve really struggled with, actually. I use Twitter a lot and there is a great community of authors there that all really help each other out. Other than that, I just use my own personal website and update it frequently with new links, interviews, and features.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Write what you know and be honest. If you’re authentic in what you’re saying, then people will believe you. Don’t worry about what may or may not happen once the book is finished. Write because you love it.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
That you don’t need to write every day to be a writer. I always feel guilty if I go a while without writing something, but pushing yourself to write can be frustrating and unproductive.
What are you reading now?
I am rereading the Unwind series by Neal Shusterman. Once I’m done, I have a long list of books by fellow indie authors that I need to dive into.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I honestly don’t know. My blog is always ongoing and even if I never write another book, that is a constant outlet for me which is a good thing.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I’m not sure about favorite, but Girl, Interrupted had the biggest impact on me and is definitely the one I’ve read the most.
