Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I am a young adult author. My debut novel Saving Sophie, a contemporary romance came out in April 2022 from Fire and Ice. My second novel OVER THE FENCE, a drama/suspense will be out in April 2023.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
SAVING SOPHIE is the story of a seventeen year old boy named Gabe who falls in love with the sole survivor of an accident (Sophie) that was caused by his half-brother. Sophie, who has a brain injury from the accident, is inspired by the numerous students I worked with as a learning disability specialist.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I can write most anywhere, but my favorite place is Panera Bread, where I can also get a cup of tea and an orange scone. It really boosts the creative juices!
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I love Jane Austen for romance, and Dick Francis and Robert B. Parker for their spare writing. I’m also a big Agatha Christie fan. In the YA genre, my favorite author hands down is Jason Reynolds.
What are you working on now?
OVER THE FENCE is the story of two girls. One was kidnapped when she was six years old and is living with her abductor and his wife. The other girl just moved to the area to be with her sister, who is in the hospital after being beaten up by her boyfriend. I was inspired to write this because of the true life stories of Elizabeth Smart and Jaycee Dugard, who were both kidnapped and eventually escaped. Also, the sister of the second girl is inspired by the true story of Yeardley Love, who was murdered in 2010 by her ex-boyfriend.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I have had some success with Book Marketing Pro and Goodreads.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Never give up! It took me ten years to get my first book published.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
From Jason Reynolds:
“Excellence is a habit. The way you live your life is the way you approach your novels…If you work to be great at every part of your life, writing a novel will feel natural to you. Excellence can’t be turned on and off.”
What are you reading now?
SEE YOU YESTERDAY by Rachel Solomon, a YA book based on the movie “Groundhog Day.”
What’s next for you as a writer?
Hopefully more readings and book signings!
What is your favorite book of all time?
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE by Jane Austen
