Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I work as a receptionist for an accounting firm in St Albans, New Zealand, although, right now like everyone I’m at home. I enjoy swimming and looking after my spaniel, Toby, who is a Very Good Boy.
I spend too much time watching cooking and home renovation shows and I’m slowly redecorating my little house.
I’ve written six books in the Mitchell Grace Mysteries series, three of which are novellas and three linking short stories. These are the first books I’ve ever released out into the world and I am both excited and nervous about that. They are:
1 – The Spider Affair
2 – The Private Affair (short)
3 – Human Resources
4 – The Caffeine Hit (short)
5 – Rogue’s Gallery
6 – Poles Apart (short)
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Poles Apart, which is a short story in The Mitchell Grace Mysteries series. I’d been watching videos of pole dance classes and thought it would be a fun situation to put my main character, female PI Mitchell Grace, in.
Also, the book prior – Rogue’s Gallery – had featured two chapters in strip clubs so it seemed like a great way to go further into the character of one of the girls at the club and add another ally/lover for Mitchell.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
Each of my books follows a strict format – Prologue, ten chapters and then an Epilogue. I roughly outline the events of the story, chapter by chapter, to give a roadmap to where I’m going.
Unfortunately, I always do this with several glasses of sparkling wine, so sometimes it can be hard to work out what I was thinking at the time!
Once I have a title and setting I send it to my cover designer who works SO fast they usually have something to show me before I’ve even outlined the book fully and I’ll often use what they’ve come up with as another piece of inspiration.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I’m really impressed by other authors from New Zealand like Nalini Singh or Stef Green. I read a wide variety of fiction around sex and sexuality from both NZ and Internationally in Aotearotica, the erotic journal also released by my publisher.
What are you working on now?
I’m outlining the next book in the series – Act Innocent. I have several friends who work in the film industry and I’m interested in putting Mitchell Grace into that environment. It’s such a great combination of incredibly disciplined technicians and artists mixed with huge egos and drama. Rich pickings for both intrigue and sexiness!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve had some small success with targeted ads on Facebook, but I’m very much learning the ropes of how to succeed in indie-publishing. So much to learn!
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Gosh, I feel too new to be giving any advice, but I suppose I would say, keep writing and find someone you trust to read it first to make sure it makes sense.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
“You miss one hundred per cent of the shots you don’t take.” I guess this is a sport saying? I’m not huge into sports but I love the spirit of this and think it applies to everything in life that involves even the smallest amount of risk.
What are you reading now?
The Secret Commonwealth by Philip Pullman
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m going to just keep going! I have ideas for at least the next couple of Mitchell Grace books and I really want to get her to a HEA, but she keeps getting herself into more and more trouble!
What is your favorite book of all time?
Pride and Prejudice. Of course! Isn’t that everyone’s favourite?
