Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Dorothy Ewels is my name, writing romance is my game. I’m a South African author and still live the city of my birth – Cape Town. I share a home with my husband, two crazy rescue dogs and a cat with plenty of cattitude.
I’m addicted to coffee, books and finding humor in life, not to mention happy endings against all odds. My husband is the inspiration behind all my heroes. If my own romance were to be to given a trope, it would be workplace romance.
I’m currently chairperson of Romance Writers Organisatoin of South Africa, coming to the end of my term of office. I’ve previously written in Samantha Cole’s Suspenseful Seduction world, Kristen Proby’s Lady Boss Press and Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland’s Cocky Hero Club. I currently write in Susan Stoker’s Special Forces world as well as for myself.
I currently have 20 or 21 books written, with many more to come.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Seducing Sheri is the book I’m writing at the moment. It’s Book 2 in my Codename Heartthrob series and is the story of the widow of the team member who died in the last book of my Operation Checkmate series, Digit’s Deflection. She’s getting her second shot at love, with a new man because my readers asked so nicely. 😀
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t know if it’s an unusual habit, but my desk is my favourite place to write. Every now and then I’ll go out to a coffee shop for a change of scenery, but mostly I will write at my desk. It brings order to the chaos in my brain, I guess.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Nora Roberts, Sylvia Day, Susan Stoker, Kristen Ashley, and too many books to mention. LOL!
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on Book 2 in my Codename Hearttrob series in Susan Stoker’s Special Forces world.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I can’t honestly say there’s one single way I find works best for me. It’s usually a combination of things. But if I had to pick just one, it would probably have to be my newsletter list.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Go as slow as you need to, don’t let all the choices overwhelm you, and give yourself the same grace you would offer anyone else in your situation.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
There is no reason you can’t write the stories of your heart AND write to market. There’s always a way to make the two work together.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently juggling two books. Fiction: Fall With Me by Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Non-fiction: Romance Your Brand – Building a Marketable Genre Fiction Series by Zoe York.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’m excited to be attending my first US signings in the summer of 2025. In fact, it’s my first trip to the US and I’m beyond excited.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I wouldn’t say it’s my favourite book of all time, but Diane Chamberlain’s The Midwife’s Confession made the biggest impact on me. It’s one I still remember to this day, and will often recommend.
