Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Originally from Virginia, I now live in Germany. I primarily write science fiction but also dabble in everything from dark fantasy to horror, poetry, and even wrote a memoir. I’m about to publish my fifth novel and my second short story.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Shattering (Book 1 of Silent Era) is releasing this weekend (April 11, 2025). It started out as one book – not a trilogy. The idea came to me during the summer of COVID. I was sitting on my couch playing Civilization VI, and the technology tree caused me to think about which era comes next.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I don’t think so. I mean, I do edit some as a go, which many regard as a ‘no-no’, but it helps me, so I do it.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
I grew up on a mixture of Stephen King, Edgar Allan Poe, and William Shakespeare. In my teenage years, I was largely influenced by the Harry Potter series. And who doesn’t love The Lord of the Rings?
What are you working on now?
I just finished the outline for a dark fantasy/paranormal suspense novel. Before I publish the second installment, I need to step back from the characters in the Silent Era trilogy.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’m still figuring that out. It’s a lot of trial and error.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Show up consistently. For yourself and for your art. You wouldn’t expect to keep your job if you showed up only when you felt like it, in a bathrobe, with a cocktail in hand, would you? Don’t treat your writing any differently. Being an artist is still a job.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Give yourself permission to not write, not be creative, take a break, or create something shitty. Give yourself permission.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. Loved the movie and loving the book.
What’s next for you as a writer?
I’ve considered getting into audiobooks, but would also like to go back to poetry. There is so much to do! I’m bursting with ideas for new science fiction and fantasy. I think the next few years will be very busy for my writing career.
What is your favorite book of all time?
Dante’s Inferno – specifically the Robert Pinsky translation. Beautiful.
