About Exertions of Better Men
Tortured by grief, Nicholas Smith ends his 21st century life in an ill-fated suicide attempt. But destiny has other plans and that’s when his 31st century life begins.
Present day college professor, Nicholas Smith, finds his life turned upside down when his wife is killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In an effort to escape his loneliness, he decides to end it all.
But fate intervenes and Nicholas finds himself thrown into a war-ravaged, post-apocalyptic 31st century where the remains of society are split into two factions: the dictatorial Proletariat Council and the rebels of the Sovereign Brotherhood. Confronted with the atrocities of the Proletariat Council, Nicholas reluctantly takes up arms.
Still reeling from his own personal loss and deeply confused about his displacement in time, Nicholas must reconcile his convictions with what those around him say is his destiny. He must decide exactly what duty means and how far he will go to defend what is right.

Ashley grew up in the transient life of a military brat. Even though her father had retired from the Air Force by the time she was born, the family had a certain wanderlust that pulled them from one place to another, never settling for long. This meant Ashley had plenty of opportunities to meet new people and experience new cultures. She continues the tradition today with her own family, as they explore all over Europe while living in Germany.
Ashley is a part-time author and full-time business intelligence professional who published her first book in 2021. She is also in development on her second novel now, a sequel to Exertions of Better Men. Ashley loves writing, especially anything about time travel. She hopes to one day flip the script and only moonlight as a data expert, becoming a full time author. When she isn’t crunching numbers or contemplating time paradoxes, she loves spending time with her husband and kids. These hours usually include playing the violin, going for a run, or watching endless hours of cartoons.
Ashley loves hearing from her readers! Feel free to contact her via her website or at ashleybvenenga@gmail.com.
