Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m a new novelist! Still in school, still working out what I want to do full-time, but writing has always been a passion of mine, and recently I’ve been doing it a lot more and getting better at it – though there’s always room for growth.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
The Community! It’s my only published book so far. I was inspired to write it based on dreams I kept having of the main character, Jay, experiencing all of these out of body experiences. I’ve had some issues with memory and blackouts myself due to brain trauma, so it was easy to slide into his shoes. I wrote
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
If I’m genuinely not in the mood, too tired, or otherwise don’t have the time to put forth what I deem an appropriate effort, I’ll write silly stories that will never see the light of day, but serve to make my friends laugh. Other than that, I need music, loud and aggressive, blaring through my ears at all times or else I can’t focus.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Stephen King is the big one. I’ve read a lot of James Patterson as well. Is it bad if I say Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series has me coming back time and time again?
What are you working on now?
Next book in the Project M series! Stay tuned for that, I hope to have it finished up some time next year – summer 2024 would be the target date.
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I’ve got my website here: https://subscribepage.io/5AMLibrary
And my UBL here: https://books2read.com/u/4jBwMo
Plus, you know, assorted social channels. But I find the best way to promote your books is utilizing sites like these with built-in and engaged audiences.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Start small, don’t get discouraged by writers block, don’t self censor (that’s what editing is for) and just let the ideas flow out of you – no matter how stupid.
Don’t be too hard on yourself, and don’t set goals that rely on others. Selling ‘x’ amount of books in your first year isn’t fair, because you don’t control that, and it often has more to do with marketing than writing anyways.
Just focus on becoming a better writer, and writing content you can show others. The rest you can figure out later. Fiction doesn’t go out of style.
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write every day.
Seriously, whatever time limit or (I’d suggest) target word count you start with, just try to carve out some time every day and do it.
That line of thinking applies to really anything you want to get better at. 30 mins a day, every day is better than 2 hours once a week.
What are you reading now?
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins. It’s a classic, apparently, and had a big influence on the genre. I’ve been struggling to get into it – I find with older writing styles that sometimes happens.
What’s next for you as a writer?
My next book, hopefully some people liking this one (I’ve gotten a few positive reviews!…and some not so positive haha), and just going where the wind takes me.
What is your favorite book of all time?
I’d like to say something super serious and important, but I’m currently still a child at heart, so Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Last Olympian.
If only they hadn’t messed up the film adaptations. Yay for TV!
