Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
I’m Freya Pickard, a Fantasy Author, and to date, I’ve published 16 e-books and 7 paperbacks.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
My latest book is Fire Daughter and it’s part of The Kaerling series, a fantasy epic on the darker side of Happily Ever After. The novel came out of a series I’d written as a 17 year old which has been completely re-thought, re-worked and re-characterised! I wanted to write about destiny and free-will, as well as exploring prejudice and the fantasy setting gives me more freedom to do this than a real-life setting.
Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I get up at 7am and do an hour’s writing before breakfast. This is the best time to write for me. I do another hour mid-morning, between walking and working out. And then I get 3 hours solid in the afternoon between lunch and supper and that’s where I get most of the re-writing and editing done.
What authors, or books have influenced you?
Tad William’s Dragonbone Chair trilogy has greatly influenced my writing as has the humour of David Eddings and the vast landscapes of JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently working on the next paperback in The Kaerling series. Each paperback is made up of 3 e-books and the first of these will be available in September this year. I’m still editing the 3rd e-book, Elkadanu, and once that is done, the paperback will be ready for launching next year!
What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I use a variety of sites to market my books but I do find that emailing my readers and supporters directly usually results in my books being downloaded.
Do you have any advice for new authors?
Don’t expect to make any money out of writing – the selling sites such as Amazon etc want to take all the money you make for themselves! But do enjoy the writing process. Always write from your heart and never, ever, write in a particular way because someone tells you it’s the right way. Find your own way of writing…
What is the best advice you have ever heard?
Write about what you know and understand.
What are you reading now?
I’m currently reading “Haliden’s Fire” by Chris R. Sendrowski – incredible writing and brilliant characters!
What’s next for you as a writer?
To complete The Kaerling series.
What is your favorite book of all time?
The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien – there’s nothing else like it
