JL Meredith

Tell us about yourself and how many books you have written.
Guardian Into the Light of Day is my first foray into fiction writing. I am currently working on a series of short-stories set in that world and will return with a full-length novel set in that universe.
I’m also working on a series of occult detective short stories.

What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?
Guardian Into the Light of Day is a superhero novel. Beverly Cleary remarked that “If you don’t see the book you want on the shelf, write it.” That’s what I did.

The character Guardian has been rattling around in my head since 1986 when I created her along with dozens of other heroes and villains for a superhero roleplaying game. She stuck out in particular and finally I sat down to begin writing her in 2015. It took about 3 years to get my skills as a writer to a place where I was competent enough to write a commercially available novel. Several re-writes later and the book was up for sale!

Do you have any unusual writing habits?
I like to listen to instrumental movie soundtracks, particularly genre related while I write.

What authors, or books have influenced you?
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman inspired me to begin writing fan fiction when I was a teenager. I created my own characters in their world.

What are you working on now?
A series of short story sequels to the first novel. I did a lot of world building in the first novel, now I can focus on telling stories in that world.

What is your best method or website when it comes to promoting your books?
I tend to do a lot of daily ads on Twitter.

Do you have any advice for new authors?
Read everyday, write everyday, study the craft of writing everyday. Write your passion.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?
You have to turn on the tap, even it is a trickle, to create. You cannot edit a blank page, so write!

What are you reading now?
At any given time I’m reading 4 or 5 books some fiction, and some non-fiction. Presently I’m reading The Temple of Elemental Evil by Thomas Reid. I’m also studying Jim Driver’s tips on writing.

What’s next for you as a writer?
Completing this short story and publishing it for Christmas (the story has a Christmas setting.)

What is your favorite book of all time?
Too difficult to pick just one!
